PCGUY112887
OK Long story short, I popped my hood today and noticed my coolant was low. Pop the oil cap, and there is is, some white sludge shit starting to build up. This is def NOT the time for this to happen. I am probably just going to have my mechanic fix it. One problem however. I already have 3400 heads and a 3400 LIM. I am going to see tomorrow if he will do the swap for me and how much it will run me since I really don't have a place to work on this in the winter and I can't have my car out of commission for who knows how long since I've never done any engine work such as this. What EXACTLY is is needed for the 3400 swap that I would need to get/tell my mechanic about? I know that the coolant inlet is different on the LIM, and there isn't a spot for a temp sensor or something on the head. What exactly is needed to take care of these issues? I was going to put a 3500 upper intake on and a bigger TB and port stuff but it doesn't look like I have time for that now. I will probably just get a stock 3400 upper intake and TB. I would need a 3100 head gasket right? Then a 3400 LIM gasket and 3400 UIM gasket... 3400 exhaust mani gaskets... what else am I missing? I need exacts here, I can't leave him in the dark. Thanks a BUNCH!
Nick1234
now at times when you take the oil cap off and there is white residue, it doesn't mean there is coolant in the oil. Most times is is just moisture and it is especially common in winter. I would pull the dipstick out and if the oil looks dark, then you should be fine. If it is whiteish brown then you have an issue. 19Cutlass94
I would say theres a problem. But if you want to do the 3400 top end swap, theres people here that have done the swap. GP1138, Brian P, just those come to mind...
PCGUY112887
I just checked the stick and couldn't really tell, didn't see any milkiness however the cap had it all over. I wiped it off and will check again tomorrow. Coolant tank used to be (as in a few days ago) just a bit above the HOT line when it was hot, and now it's well below the COOL line when it's hot. It had to go somewhere.
5speedz34
Does the oil smell sweet? There should be a write-up on 60; I would print that and give it to my mechanic.
Brian P
what year and model car?
gimper
A good thing can also to tap off the oil if there is that amount of water in the oil it will show and smell. White sludge is often just moist especially around ventilation points - had it my Harely once and it's definitly no coldant used on that engine ;-). PCGUY112887
1996 Grand prix 3100 btw. I'll try to get a pic, i'm talking to the mechanic today to see what he says. If anyone knows of a good writeup please let me know, since I can only seem to gather things from people posting about it, no "writeup" really. Brian P
you've got it easy being a '96. Get a set of manifolds from a '96-99 minivan and it's almost a direct swap. The alternator braces won't be reuseable from your engine, as well as the MAP sensor mounting bracket. Everything else is good
