Supreme Cutlass
Probably engine oil, it's totally normal for a little bit to be sucked through the PCV system. Might want to check your PCV system if it's alot.

19Cutlass94
There only a couple bucks. But dont feel bad, My whole plenum was covered with oil, in which there were puddles of it behind the TB. Not sure if there still is or not though... 97loudcut
The PCV valve...is on the FRONT valve cover and is easy as cake to replace.. atleast on the 3100's. BTW it's like $3 at the parts store for a new one.
19Cutlass94
*cough* Hes got a 3.1MPFI *cough*

You're right about the 3100's, but he has got an older 3.1... they're a bitch on the old ones. 19Cutlass94, these large puddles of oil might have something to do with your purported horrible accelleration. I guess it could be. Maybe Ill pick up a new PCV valve tomorrow, take the TB off and see whats going on in there.

My old 2.8 rain oily too... it probably needed the PCV changed on it too but I never got around to doing it.
sclary18
so how do you change it since its impossible...?
Bossman429
You CAN rock the motor forward as if doing rear plugs, it just slides into the rear valve cover. That's how I did mine in my last tune up. it took me a good 15 minutes of fighting it to get the valve into the S hose. The easier way to do it if you are mechanically inclined is to pull the upper intake manifold off, and replace the whole S hose, and PCV vale, the hose and valve should be less than $10. You'll also need upper plenum gaskets, and a throttle body gasket. Maybe $10 as well I think removing the 2 throttle body bolts, and pushing the T/B to the side out of the way is MUCH easier than trying to unhook the coolant hoses underneath the T/B to keep the upper plenum and T/B together as you remove them. It is worth the $2 T/B gasket to not have to fight it. This would be a good time to do the distributor o-ring too if you haven't done it yet. It's really easy to remove all that stuff to. What hose where you replacing? The coolant hose that comes from the heater core to the water pump? Also, the older the car the car the more "tolerances" the gaskets, rings, etc. has so a newer car vs. a older car will have more blow by and oil usage. Bossman429
By "S hose" I meant the curved hose that connects from the PCV valve to the under side of the upper intake

You're little "roll" and the "running my mouth" comment wasn't needed, so you can STFU and go back to trying to sell me things via PM
Psych0matt
now now, kids i dont remember my 2.8 being hard at all, but its been probably 5 years since ive seen one (3 years since ive had on). I do know that I still haven't been able to find it on my engine
mfewtrail
With an old or new PCV valve, there's always going to be a small amount of oily residue from the crankcase that will accumulate in the intake hose/throttle body area. As the engine gets more wear on it, more oil will accumulate...
z34duck
every higher mile 2.8 and 3.1 ive ever had has done this and yea the higher the miles the more oil that has been present. i just cleaned the oil out with a clean rag. and a little dragon fire (carb cleaner) every now and then.its all good
