chadz34
For those with a 1996 LQ1, when your car is at FULL temperature, when you start your car what does it idle at immediatley? Mine seems a bit high at 1,300 or so but lowers to 800 or so within seconds, I just don't see why it has to be that high for full temperature. The mechanics had it on the code reader and EVERYTHING matches up, so they don't see it as a problem. But, rather how the car is supposed to idle. Thanks! BTW there are NO vacuum leaks and I have new head and intake gaskets. The TPS is fine too. The only thing I could come up with is a coolant temp sensor but wouldn't that throw a code? And also if it were a coolant temp sensor wouldn't my temp guage stay in the cold area?
joey b
my 92 with the 96 engine does the same. My 95 does not. Only idles high for about 5 seconds, but moreso when cold.
Psych0matt
itll idle starting around 1300, but drop down to around 800 or so withing a few seconds, and stay there
chadz34
itll idle starting around 1300, but drop down to around 800 or so withing a few seconds, and stay there Alrighty, even when it's warm? Like, mine drops to 800 in a few seconds too, I just didn't know it was supposed to do that. Becuase my 92' just starts and drops immediately to 800. Psych0matt
my thought is that maybe the computer has a slightly different startup setting in the computer? I'll check it out tonight maybe, I should start the car up anyways.

slick
Every vehicle that I have ever been in, warm or cold, when you start it will be at a higher rpm, then drop(within a few seconds if warm, within a few minutes if cold). Your car is fine. Don't touch anything else that you can't fix.

Psych0matt
i noticed on mine tonight, i started her up for a while since i havent driven her in over a week, i let it run for a while, idled around 850-900, revved it to about 3k slowly, and then let her back down, and she leveled off around 775-810. thought it was a little interesting, although im not surprized or anything

I've seen some cars start at a low idle, shoot up to a higer rpm, then come back down after a bit to normal idle range as well. You both are fine. chadz34
One last question Slick? When I start it in the morning it kinda revvs up and down a little bit like from 1,300 to 1,100rpm I know it's not the tach cause I can hear the engine doing it. Is this normal? Becuase I have no vacuum or intake leaks. Once, warm it no longer fluctuates.

Not to contradict you but it shouldn't surge when its cold, Chris. Honestly though Chad I wouldn't worry about it. You are going to screw anything else up if you don't know what you're doing.
