Nick1234
When i hit the gas to take off, when i first hit the gas the motor drops in idle before it picks up. It does it real quick. Im sure someone knows what i mean. The drop in idle is big enough where at times it will die, or almost die. So if im taking off, hit the gas, rpms drop to like 500 or lower, and then it quickly picks up. I tried doing an idle relearn due to the fact that this started off when i had the battery disconnected. I cleaned the IAC but i don't know if it is bad? Second problem. Im having major issues with dimming lights, and the volt guage dropping a lot. When the lights are on and hit the brake, or the heater is on, it all seems to draw more power than it should. I have a new alternator, and a new battery. All the connections on the battery care clean. I tried cleaning grounds. I have an extra ground from the brake booster mount to the bracket on the back of the plenum. I don't know where the main motor to chassis ground is. Any ideas? slick
For the idle, i'd start by checking your plugs and wires, make sure they are gapped properly. Then, go ahead and run some top-end cleaner through to clean up any carbon buildup(wait, is this safe to do with a Turbo engine??). And, just go from there. Electrical, I'd start off by taking a DMM, and checking the voltage of the battery when the car is off, and check it when someone is starting the car up also. Then, I would check the actual output of the alternator itself. The stock battery cables are only an 8 to 10 guage wire. You could always upgrade those, as it would be less resistance on the electrical system itself, allowing a bit more power to flow through the stock system. 1990lumina
My 3.1 will do that after a while if I don't run injector cleaner... I usually throw a bottle of that STP concentrated shit in every couple fill ups...i'm sure a have a few injectors working less then 100%...but yeah I had the idle/almost stall with gas issue before I ran that cleaner....it's worth a shot i've heard it's also just a characteristic of the multi port injection, and that the later sequential injection solved the problem.. Canada
Did you hook the vacuum back up to the fuel pressure regulator? What brand of alternator did you buy?
Nick1234
the basic autozone alternator.
mra32
oo snap, i have these exact problems and more! my plan is to seafoam, clean the IAT, plugs & wires, O2 sensor, fuel filter (all as part of maintenance). question: is top end cleaner better than seafoam? which would get it most clean? Edit: The lights dimmed in my dad's 05 sierra when i put the windows up, so i just thought dimming of things were normal, and i shouldnt expect optimal performance of my 15 year old car. I can see the gauges dimming a tiny little bit when I'm idling at a red light at night. The overhead light also gets pretty dim when i have my hazards on. My power steering pump was leaking right onto the serpentine belt before. I heard that power steering fluid is bad for an alternator. This alternator had also been replaced about 3 years ago. Im fairly sure it was with a remanufcatured unit.
Andrew
everyone here that has used Seafoam swears by it now, so i would go with that.
