CNBZ34
Revised ALLDATA procedure says to drop rear of engine cradle 4" to remove the alternator. I did this and after having everything undone, it still could not get the c**k sucker out! Any suggestions? It has been upgraded with the later model internal fan style alternator. After my exercise last night, I officially hate my friggin car!
digitaloutsider
http://www.w-body.com/forum/index.php/topic,30225.0.html Personally, you may want to try pulling the axle.
Regal_GS_1989
http://www.w-body.com/forum/index.php/topic,30225.0.html Personally, you may want to try pulling the axle. Slicks write up is honestly the easiest way to pull the alt on a 3.4 The hardest part of the whole procedure is getting out the one bolt that is behind the alt, unless someone else already took it out before you. When it comes time to put it back together, leave that bolt out. It doesn't really serve a purpose. I used about 1.5 feet of extensions, a u-joint, and I believe a 12 mm socket and got it from underneiith.
patgizz
that bolt is easy if you have the proper tool specified in the factory manual.... a 48" extension for your 3/8 drive ratchet FYI i have one, solely for doing 3.4 alternators. CNBZ34
Well, here's an update. After jerking off in the garage for several hours and not able to get it out I got frustrated, put it back together and took it to the shop where I was a service manager. Turns out the first alt I bought was bad. So Napa upgrades me to a new "lifetime" alt. Shop installs that one and $340 later I get a call to pick up my car. Said that it was charging @ 14.2 v, 160 amps. I get in it after paying the bill....flatline, no output from alt at all! Now I'm scratching my head. This all started because my original alt was intermittently failing. Lights would pulsate bright to normal and amp guage was jumping from 13-16 v. I discovered upon initial trouble shoot that the neg batt cable was loose on the stud on the engine. After repairing that I had hoped that problem solved. NOPE! Then came the attempt at removing the alt on my garage floor. Funny thing was, after I tried removing the original one and put it back together, it started working correctly. This is turning into an expensive, head scratching experience. After I get this straightened out, Car is heading down the road! Time for a new truck! slick
No output from the alt at idle, or at any rpm? It is very very possible to get a bad alternator, straight from the parts store.
CNBZ34
This would make 2 bad alternators from the parts store and the 2nd one was working, now it's not. Like i said, after I get this straightened out....car is for sale. Anyone interested?
Psych0matt
im on my third napa alt in 2 years, so id say its possible
19Cutlass94
From working at NAPA, is IS possible. Although it usually doesnt happen much, we do get defects from both brand new and remans. Honestly, I dont think this situation is worth selling the car over IMHO. Unless theres something I dont know about.
CNBZ34
I suspect that it is a faulty alternator as my original one was still working, just intermittently causing the lights to pulsate and voltage jumping around from 13-16v. However, the ass raping I'm getting from the shop to do this because 1- I provided the alternator and 2- I just don't have time to do it and 3- it's a miserable job. Having a 150 mile roundtrip commutte for work, I have to be able to trust the car and now that is being questioned. the car is awesome otherwise.... 97 crate engine w24k remaned trans and new rack/struts lots of other new stuff..... I guess I'm just disgusted at this point. NAPA is being cool about it but to a point. I'm very screwed without my wheels though and it's been a week now. The car was upgraded to the 97 style alternator when the engine was done as the old style had 1 external fan versus the 97 style with dual internal fans. Has anyone else done this and if so, had any problems?
