Getrag 282 getting stuck in 2 gears at once.

First off, I tried searching for this first, but didnt find what I was looking for.

Anyway, 2 times downshifting out of fourth into a lower gear the trans somehow gets stuck in two gears at once. You cant move the shifter side to side when this happens.

Ive gotten out of this by just playing with the shifter and doing some desperate hammering/prybaring on the o the brackets the shifter cables attach to. Somehow I manage to get it to work again, but gernerally have no idea what i did in either case.

Out side of this the trans has been fine except for first gear being notchy. Im wondering if maybe one of the shifter cables is stretched or out of alignment somehow. The car does have 150k Miles on it.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Id start be checking each connection of the shifter cables, both on the tranny, and on the shifter brackets. I dont think its a tranny issue since you said you can get it free by messing with the brackets, Id just start there.

i'm having a hard time picturing being in 2 gears at once...don't know how that is possible. i've had some serious issues with the cable that controls the side to side motion on my shifter(i'm on my 3rd cable now). def check it out, you should be able to see if it is coming apart by checking both ends of it where the large bushing is that holds it to the tranny and the shifter itself. both times i broke cables it was on the outside where it is tied down to the tranny

Well it didnt help that you had no heat shield there either... BTW how is that cable holding up?

Did you get a chance to check out the cables?

Almost sounds like what happened to me when my cables came out of that bracket. I coud move the shifter but it was stuck in 1st.

When its stuck, does the car move?

If it does, you aren't stuck in two gears, just bound the shifter up. If it was in two ratios at once, you'd go nowere.

im not all that keen on standards but as far as i know it is not at all possible to get stuck in more than one gear. got to check your bracket bushings :thumb:
