DEMonte1997
2000 Regal GS with 67,000 miles I was accelerating from a stoplight this morning and heard a really loud 'CLUNK' from the back of my car. At first I though someone hit me or I ran something over that nailed the underneath of the car (it was that loud). On the highway, sound seemed to come back when I went over bumps but it was intermittent and not as loud. Some bumps it would make the sound, others no. I heard the noise again when I was braking for a stop light. Anyone have an idea of what happened? I pushed down on all 4 corners of the car to try and reproduce the noise and got nothing. Rocking the car back and forth does nothing either. Car seems to recover quickly after pushing down on it so I think the struts are okay. Q-Ball
are the struts bouncing though?
DEMonte1997
No, they are not.
Euro
hmm....have you looked underneath the car at all? i had a sound like that and i was like oh shit what just broke? turns out it was a branch stuck to my downpipe
DEMonte1997
I checked under there and didn't see anything. Checked all the bolts and everything seems tight. I had a friend go out for a drive with me and he said the sound seemed like bad struts up front. Guess I'll be upgrading those.
Euro
bah just tell the wife that you need a whole new suspension and get the GMPP kit
19Cutlass94
If it was something loose up front with the struts, you would deffinatly be able to tell. But heres how you can tell. Push on the top of the front tires. Push them into the car, then pull them out, kinda like that. And if anything is loose there, youll hear it clunking around. DEMonte1997
**Problem FOUND.** Snapped the front swaybar. Oh well... it's way cheaper than new struts!!! This might take care of some of the KR I was getting too (maybe it was false). Good news no matter what. Thanks for the help guys, I appreciate it! mfewtrail
How?!? Rust or metal fatigue most likely, look around and you'll find a lot of 2nd Gen cars located up North have broken the front sway bars.
Euro
broken front sway bar=KR?
DEMonte1997
^^ It could cause FALSE KR from the added vibration.

digitaloutsider
^^ It could cause FALSE KR from the added vibration. Very common. Come to think of it.. I better inspect my swaybar. I've got one HELL of a clunk, and right as it's about to shift, it happens and you FEEL the car retard the timing way down. DEMonte1997
Put the new swaybar in yesterday. Also installed Energy Suspension poly swaybar bushings and they dramatically helped with handling. I highly recommend those to anyone looking for a cheap/effective handling mod. Andrew
bah just tell the wife that you need a whole new suspension and get the GMPP kit GMPP no longer makes the Koni kit, just FYI. i noticed a few months ago. which sucked because i wanted to buy it. Did you buy a factory swaybar?? I would also recommend gettin the GMPP trailing arms and STB too, they help handling quite a bit IMO. And they are inexpensive. I wouldnt really bother with the rear sway bar, you re-use the factory end links which are about as thick as a straw.
