Cutty Hertz Posted May 28, 2003 Report Posted May 28, 2003 HELP!!! My speedo isn't working! I hit a bump a while ago and it never worked since. I was told I may have knocked a sensor loose from the tires, but which tire is it on? What does it look like? OOh, an 88' Cutlass 2.8 Quote
Justin Posted May 28, 2003 Report Posted May 28, 2003 It's not on your tire. It's near the RH CV axle, there should be a connector on the top of your tranny there. The sensors on the wheels, actually near the outer CV joint, are for ABS, which your car doesn't have. Those are wheel speed sensors, but not the vehicle speed sensor, VSS, that runs the speedo. Cutty Hertz Posted May 28, 2003 Author Report Posted May 28, 2003 Yeah, all digital. So should I replace the VSS? Were is ti? Quote
Cutty Hertz Posted June 2, 2003 Author Report Posted June 2, 2003 Will the VSS also afect the RPM gauge? Quote
Slade901 Posted June 5, 2003 Report Posted June 5, 2003 Check the wirings to the VSS but I believe it is you Digital Cluster. You may have to resolder the IC (integrated chip) connectors first and then test it. Also, check for leaking capacitors (it looks like crud on the capacitors). Quote
Cutty Hertz Posted June 8, 2003 Author Report Posted June 8, 2003 It wasn't worked even before the digital cluster was installed. Where exactly is the VSS? What does it look like? How wou I remove it? Quote
Cutty Hertz Posted June 14, 2003 Author Report Posted June 14, 2003 I KNOW someone else has had this problem.... Quote
Slade901 Posted June 14, 2003 Report Posted June 14, 2003 VSS is located just above the transmission. You will be have a better access/view from underneath.  9 out of 10 it you Digital Instrument Cluster that needs re-soldering. VSS seldom fails.  Check out my experience  http://www.geocities.com/southbeach/sands/2476/automobile/digital_instrument_cluster.htm Quote
Cutty Hertz Posted June 17, 2003 Author Report Posted June 17, 2003 BUT, the speedo WAS NOT working BEFORE the digital gauges! Quote
GnatGoSplat Posted June 18, 2003 Report Posted June 18, 2003 I think it's the VSS or ECM, or wiring in between. You might have to pull off the right wheel to see the VSS. Quote
GnatGoSplat Posted June 18, 2003 Report Posted June 18, 2003 No, your other right. Passenger side wheel. Quote
Slade901 Posted June 18, 2003 Report Posted June 18, 2003 I think it's the VSS or ECM, or wiring in between. You might have to pull off the right wheel to see the VSS. Â I think you are right. The tire on the passenger side is called the right front tire. The orientation is done as if you are inside the car looking through the front windshield. Quote
Cutty Hertz Posted June 25, 2003 Author Report Posted June 25, 2003 OK, there was this 2-prong plug loose behind the pass. side tire and I cleaned it off and just plugged it back up. I can't see if that's it because the starter's front bolt hole broke off. I gots the good lucks! Quote
Cutty Hertz Posted June 26, 2003 Author Report Posted June 26, 2003 Ok, I just finished putting the starter back on (took longer to get to the parts store) and tryed to drive it, and the speedo is now working! But the RPM gauge isn't. It's always something..... Quote
