I got a problem that even the dealers here in Oregon can't diagnose

Picture this iof you will: Start the little car and let it warm up as is my normal routine. leave the garage and drive at 25 up to the main highway. Turn onto the main highway and at 55 engage the cruise control and then it starts. The speedo starts jumping all over the dial and will, when the gas pedal is released and it is in coast go to zero. The lightest touch on the gas pedal and it jumps up to whatever speed the car is actually going? when the cruise is engaged it will jump forward and relax over and over or until you shut down the cruise completely. Even with the cruise off the speedo is still doing the same thing.dropping to zero when it is coasting then the lightest touch of the accelerator will cause it to jump forward again. It doesn't make any difference what the speed is or the conditions of the highway. AND then all of that will stop after a full stop has happened the car sits still for a few minutes restarted and off down the road again and the damn thing will behave as a brand new car. Everything works perfectly...any suggestions guys? I took it to my local GM dealer and they didn't have a clue except to ask me to bring it in at $65.00 per hour for a look see??? Another GM dealer thinks it might be the "Module" that controls the Cruise and speedo...does anyone know if they are the same part and where I might find said "module"? Sorry this is so long everyone but I thought if anyplace might have an answer this would be it?

my cruise control has been on the fritz ever since I got my car over a year ago... personally I'd rather live without it. NO idea how to fix it on my own and the dealers around here want a damn fortune to do it...

FWIW - mine does nothing at all... so I have no idea where to start... at least yours does SOMETHING I suppose, lol

Good luck man

Hello,

I would first dissconnect the cruise control module and the accuator or what ever its called. Do the test again and see what happens. Next this is to see how the signal of VSS is routed, it might give you a good clue where to start looking. To me it looks like something is interfering with the signal.

So why does it do that only once? Well it can have things like moist (rains a lot in oregon doesn't it). Then when you turn it off and wait a little it clears. It can also be heating when it reaches a temp it acts funny. Etc..

It can also be a ground problem, ground problems can be funny making things act up when the current takes an alternative path so to say.

Cheers Gimper...

yours is most likely a vacuum problem, do your vents work properly on all settings? look for the checdk vlave and make sure the vac ball is attached properly.

littleredcar,

Does the speedo ever read faster then actual speed, or just between zero and actual speed?

try this as well:

find the vss, located on the rear right of the tranny, below the alt area (on a 3.1),

unplug it and inspect the connector and condition of the wires. most likely there is a short to ground or corroded end, IMO.

lets assume you are out driving and it is misbehaving. try unpluging it and seeing if it still is goofing up... see if the speedo remains totally dead or jumps around irregardless.

results?

Tom,

The cruise control module is located to the left of the steering column up under the dash. You will have to take off the carpeted access panel to get to it.

I wonder if it's either the module or the Vehicle Speed Sensor.

I THINK I have a NOS module if that's what it may be. I thought that was what it was on mine but it turned out to be a bad wire. Let me know if you are interested.

***would it be possible for you to take a digital snapshot of that unit so I will know what to look for? I had that kick panel off forthe people to repair the door jamb problem recently...I wonder if I might just of pulled something loose?

***Th

My TGP had a cracked vac line and would do something similar. Replace your vac lines and that should fix it.

Check out my TGP thread on how I fixed it. http://www.w-body.com/forum/index.php/topic,51587.0.html

ank you Jamie***

***I read what you did and unfortunately all of my vacume lines are new. and connected and all of my vents work correctly but thanks anyway for the tip***

Do any of the other guages do crazy things when this happens or is it just the Speedo?

***No all of the gauges work fine, only the speedo does the jumping around???***

***Yes indeed it do rain here in Oregon doing it as we speak to the point where Northern Oregon is in a flood warning...lol Thank you for the tip and again that comment about the ground might just be the key...as I said I had that drivers side kick panel off while the body shop was repairing the door jamb...first place I'm going to look.***

***No the speedo never goes above actual speed just to zero until I lightly touch the gas pedal..I will check that unit right under the Alt. for sure, thank you*** Tom

I would check the VSS first.....when I had a problem with mine the speedo was jumping all over and causing the car to drive like it had a slipping transmission....there was a wire that was coroded/broken...I fixed it and the car drove like a million bucks
