THe_DeTAiL3R
Well today I went to Best Buy and some other stores, and on my way home I looked at my dash and though, "hey, maybe I can make a center speaker?" In the space above the vents there is that useless cubby hole... http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v257/dsjune/95%20GP/july%2006%20interior/IMG_2705.jpg There are lots of home center speakers that are tiny and sound "good"... Possible ideas: -Get the tweeter from a component set off ebay, it would be pretty cheap. Maybe put a small woofer (4"?) in the cubby hole or behind it -Get a computer speaker (Logitech or something) that has a full range sound. Stuff it in there. Get a small cheap amplifier and cross the L and R RCAs together. I'm also wondering about possibly putting a woofer of some sort in the bottem of the console by the floor, facing the passenger side probably (like on a Pontiac Torrent). I dunno, just some ideas. The rest of my car has 6x9 Infinity reference and 5.25" Infinity components up front.
THe_DeTAiL3R
crap, can a mod move this to the audio section?
Steven_S
I believe clarion actually makes a center speaker for cars. But then again I think that was 2 years ago.
THe_DeTAiL3R
If anyone knows of a product designed for a center speaker let me know. I'm not gonna hack a hole in the top of my dash though, it's gotta fit in that stupid cubby hole.
97loudcut
My buddy has a center speaker in his 2dr. Monte Carlo.. It looks like complete ass but sounds pretty good. If you can fab somthing up so it doesn't look "nig rigged" then i say do it.
slick
You can do this, but you will need a deck that is 5.1 capable(there are a few out there that have the capabilities, as with amplifiers). Just adding a center speaker off of a left or right channel won't do anything but add more sound, and throw off the imaging bigtime. A lot of Chrysler's come with them mounted in the dash, near the windshield. They're systems are set up as a "surround sound" stereo system, and actually don't sound horrible. But.... again, this isn't exactly what you are looking to achieve if your going for awesome sound quality.
THe_DeTAiL3R
What about that Monsoon speaker system that has the speaker in the middle of the dash... how does that work?
slick
What about that Monsoon speaker system that has the speaker in the middle of the dash... how does that work? They may have a DTS/Dobly Digital/whatever the hell GM uses amplifier or crossover in the vehicle. Or.... as you said, they may take a left and right audio source, put it into some sort of crossover, and run 1 audio source up to the center speaker. Really hard saying. IMO, if your gonna do, I'd do it right and search for an amp or HU that has the capability. I've seen them before, and pondered doing it myself, but after seeing the pricetag, I wanted to kill myself
Q-Ball
But how would you splice the signal? Do HU's have a spot for center channel? I think it would just be balance more of left or right. I guess whatever wire to splice it off of.

Probably piggyback it off one of the other amps in the trunk. I really need to adjust the tweeters first, stupid flushmount FTL.
ToroToro
My STS has a center speaker right on top of the dash. It plays the "dings" and voice activated shit I dont use. It plays the radio too, and it actually makes quite a difference. I'd say go for it if you can make some kind of grill that would look nice. Maybe if you get a "performance audio" badge from a SSE or Fiero, that would really complete the factory look. I might have one you can have... 1990lumina
My dad's Volvo has a center channel speaker too...for the 5.1 DVD audio discs or something....it does work when listening to radio and such thouh....I think the HU just creates a center channel...much like Dolby ProLogic II does for home theatres.. GnatGoSplat
I believe clarion actually makes a center speaker for cars. But then again I think that was 2 years ago. Yeah, Clarion actually made one that fit into a 1/2-DIN slot. I can't imagine it would sound that great, but who knows. Would there really be any point to a center channel speaker in a car? You're just playing 2-channel audio sources anyway.
19Cutlass94
I duno, I think it would sound really odd..... My friend had an 8" JL ( dont know what model ) but that was in his center consul for a while. That was crazy and it sounded great! I think if you really wanted to do something there, a speaker is not the way to go.
THe_DeTAiL3R
I need to mount my tweeters better. I was in a Buick Rainier today (Bose system) and it had speakers on the dash, pointing at the window. It sounded pretty good... giving me ideas anyways. Garrett Powered
I have to install a center channel in my tgp. the jvc needs one so I will be getting around to it sometime soon here. I need to run an amp to it though cause the deck power doesnt have a center channel. I was talking with jeff m a while ago and I guess he somehow mounted his pointing out the defrost vents. I gotta take off the dash and see how much rooms in there.

The other rear speaker cable got snapped while doing the rear struts. But I plan on using the newwer 94-96 door panels which I have a tweeter and a mid range in there. Add a center and some new componets like C-Bad and I'm good to go with 11! But ofcourse I still need a sub/subs and a amp.

The HU would have to support DTS or Dolby to play in 5.1, otherwise it will play just as cd music does.
