Singh
how comon is it for 3.4's to blow a gasket aroudn 130k ? im asking because i dont know if my headgasket is blown or if its the heater pipe that runs under the car and then behind the enging to the heater core. Im saving money for l67 and parts swap but in meantime i want to see if i can temp fix this problem so i have somehting to drive instead of borrowing a car all the time yano. is it easy to rip that pipe that runs from the piipe, under the car, and then behind the engine and into the firewall? well not easy but is it worth doing to find out the problem./ cuz the smoke of coolant is coming from in between the firewall and the engine so imthinking its either the head or the pipe... the pipe had holes so i cut it off short and rana heater hose from the firewall to the pump kind of a short cut to save 150 bucks from dealer part . i hope somone can understand that im sure its pretty confusing when i type in a hurry, sorry, but any help is appreciated thanks! -Singh
THe_DeTAiL3R
I ran rubber hose from the heatercore to the engine but it was too long, and it rubbed against something and burned a tiny hole- steam came out like crazy. I know my 3100 is pretty easy to work on, so the problem was easy to diagnose.
Singh
yea i think in the 3.1's it was easier to get behind there or w/e at least my brother didnt have any problems with his widebodies changing that hose in his 3.1's but my 3.4 he says its alot tighter back there and i agree it was very VERY hard to rock the engine foward to even change the sparks .... CSI_MuNkY
I blew the hose and then a head gasket all in the same month! The hose was a bitch to get, I was told there were only 3 left in canada (was also told that its not just a rubber hose, its a combination of materials...) I dunno how much truth there is to this... In the end when I had the gasket swap done, I discovered that in 5 of the 6 cylinders the gaskets were being fired on. I also found out that my t-stat was stuck, not sure if that had anything to do with the hose breaking or not, but the garage I took it to said it could of been caused by the t-stat sticking... As for diagnosing the problem... really no way to find out without ripping down the engine... I hate the LQ1... I'm with you... going to an L67 as soon as my bank account allows it... THe_DeTAiL3R
On my 3100 they are rubber hoses that go from the firewall to the metal pipes (lower intake/waterpump). Held on by spring clamps. Cost me $4 for bulk hose which I cut to size.. I dunno about the 3.4s though.
slick
I haven't seen many 3.4's blow there headgaskets, but thats not to say your's haven't. I'd start with a compression test, and go from there.
