Sounds like a fuel pump?

1995 Olds Cutlass Supreme 3.1

Wouldn't start right away at lunch time, engine would catch, rev up, then die. Repeat 2-3 times, then with some throttle I can get it running. Idles for a few mins then dies.

Get it started again and let it warm up. Drive around for a while then the engine starts to chug, I pull off and it dies. Again 3-4 times I try to start it, it catches, revs then dies. I get it going, runs Ok for a while then chugs and dies.

SES light is popping on and off all throughout this, but of course it isn't the type that I can read with the paper clip.

Logic tells me that it is a faulty fuel pump. Any advice?

I'm going to see if I can make it to AutoZone and have them pull the code.

Any chance I'm lucky and I don't have to drop the tank to replace the fuel pump? I heard somewhere that later W bodies have an access hatch from the interior.

Hello,

If you own any fuel injected vehicle, you should have a fuel pressure gauge or know someone who has one. Reading your fuel pressure is one of the 5 steps to figuring out what is wrong with your vehicle, regardless as to what is wrong. Think of it as being similar to how when you visit the doctor, they take your blood pressure, pulse, measure your weight and height even before they know what is wrong with you.

Autozone won't be able to read the code. Only way you'll get it scanned is if you take it somewhere that can read OBD 1.5. I would run a fuel pressure test on it, see what it puts out for fuel pressure. If it's really low like 10-20psi then the pump is bad. I forget what they are supposed to have for pressure, I think its somewhere around 40-47psi.

alledgedly, a few have the right equipment. heard of one case but can't remeber who.

check....... for spark on all six spark plugs, I think it is something besides just the fuel pump, like a faultly coil or failed injector.

I check for spark by inserting a screwdriver into the plug wire end and laying atop the mainfold... and changing the wire tested with the car off.

You guys were right! That's what I get for jumping to conclusions...

I went to Autozone and they couldn't read ODB 1.5, but thankfully Checker could. Threw a code 34 and 35, MAF/MAP sensor and Idle error.

Autozone and Napa tried to sell me some god awfully huge MAF thing that obviously had no place in my system, and after doing some quick research it looked like my engine doesn't use a MAF sensor (neither auto place could figure that out) so I replaced the MAP sensor. 40$ later and everything seems to be running OK.

So I got lucky! Quite the day, stalled out in traffic 3 times I believe.
