3.1 owners-idle rpm and oil pressure?

Recommended Posts

I'm just curious what other 3.1 owners are getting for idle rpm and oil pressure. My 90 GP idles at 550-600rpms and the oil pressure when hot at this idle is only about 20psi (granted it goes up to 40psi at 1500rpms). Both just seem a little low to me. What about you guys?

In gear, warm idle should be around 600-700rpms and oil pressure is usually around 20psi. Warm idle in neutral is usually around 700-800rpms and oil pressure is usually around 25psi. 20psi is plenty at idle. GM spec is like 11 or 12psi at idle, I believe.

I think my idle is high, about 1000 rpm. And my oil pressure is usually at half of whatever the gauge is.

My 90 TGP 's pressure at Idle is about 40, but TGP's have a higher volume oil pump. My idle is at about 900RPM.

The "minimum" oil pressure rating for a 3.1 is either 15 or 18psi @ 1100rpms.

at hot or cold idle mines at 900rpms and right around 60 psi at cold idleand when warm usually runs between 40 and 60 psi oil pressure but when dead cold its pegged the oil pressure gauge a time or two and mind you not thats with 236k half way to 237k what do you all think it sound right or u think i got a high flow oil pump installed

My Regal is steady at 630 - 640 RPM's at idle. Its the smoothest Idling vehicle I own. Not too sure what the exact pressure is at idle though cause the sensor is shot, so the guage is pegged out most of the time

When I start it up in the morning the guage reads 500kPa then as it warms up it's read 3/4 at idle....but if the temperature guage goes over a quarter (70ish*C) the pressure goes down to a quarter on the guage...but goes back up to 3/4 if I bring the idle speed up to 1000rpm

My car idles around 900-1000 at all times...except when cold..it's 1200-1300 but within minutes its 900-1000 all the time, I find it weird cause my dads 94 cutlass is at 600-700...go figure...as for the oil pressure no idea

Cold = 900-1100 idle, well over 40 oil pressure

Warm = 500-700 idle, 20-25 oil pressure

I got:

1000 rpm when cold w/ 60psi of oil pressure

500- 600 rpm when warm w/ 40psi of oil pressure

I use 10w30 in the summer

and 5w30 in the winter.

you do not want too much oil pressure, because they may be bad for the filter. Frams especially have burst their element under excess pressure.

When I've had 10w30 in the car, the gauge will peg when it's near freezing outside. usually around 2500 rpm.

othewise the guage will hang at 1/4 (20psi) when warm and idling around 600.

my lumina seemed to have about a 450-500 RPM rough idle when hot in the summer. I had to turn the ac on to smooth it out.... the idle kick-up, gave me a smooth 550-600 rpm idle. :dunno:

you have the newer gage cluster, like mine, that reads higher than it actually is. My tach was always about 200rpm too high when compared to the computer scanner readout. I popped the needle off and repositioned it, now it's good :)

Really? My gauge just sits there and NEVER moves.... Did you fix yours?

Im running 5w30 with a fram. I have had the oil pump replaced. It was a long time ago though. I think 40psi is alright. Hey, maybe the guage is off.
