I was told that a different year will fit the older style w-bodys. Anybody know anything about this and a part number

Just a replacement starter? Just go to the auto parts store and get one for pretty much any newer GM 2000+ FWD car(this includes the 4 and 6 cylinder cars, they all use the same starter).

Go to your parts store and ask for a starter for a 2003 V6 Grand Am.

Edit - Wait we're talking about for an older 3100/3400 right? (dunno if the DOHC starters are the same or not).

The DOHC starters are the exact same. Same with the 3100's, 3400's, 2.2's, 2.4's, etc....

L67's have came with a more powerful starter than the 60*'s and the L36. IIRC it's ~2.3hp vs like 2hp. Not a big difference, but some.

I just bought a rebuilt with 1 year warrenty from Canadian Tire. They will give you 65 bucks for your old one too!

When I replaced mine I asked for a starter for a '99 Malibu IIRC. It was the smallest I could find as opposed to any other 60* car.

2.3 (Q4) and 2.4 (TC) starters will NOT work. Just to correct a little slip up there :)

Thanks, I knew the 2.3 wouldn't, didn't know the 2.4 wouldn't though.

My new starter sounds a lot different than my old one. It sounds more higher pitched. But it does starter quicker and I've never had a bad start.
