birdman
Now i know theres a writeup on 60 how to do it but to someone who isnt really fimular (sp) with the internals of the tranny its confusing. first question is how deep into the tranny do you have to go? is it like tearing the whold thing down? or is the chain and gears right there? Second question, assuming i get a better understanding of the swap, how long does it take? and lastly, is it pretty much a swap job or do you need to do lots of adjustments and things like that? thanks. patgizz
wait till spring i'll give you my trans with 3.73 fdr for cheap cause it slips. the chain is under the side cover. it might be under the valve body as well but its literally been years and years since i've had a 4T60 apart. Brian P
you should already have the proper chain for it, assuming you are talking about your 3.4 DOHC car. All you have to do is grab the differential and outer sun gear from a 3.33 FDR (3.1) tranny, and swap it into yours. If you didn't have the gears, it'd be as involved as removing everything from the side of the tranny up to and incl. the channel plate. Not a beginner's job by far. Changing the diff isn't to hard a job. If you can change the alt on a 3.4, then you can easily tackle the diff. Once the alt is out, you can easily remove the tailshaft bracket, and the diff housing. Once the housing is off, there is 1 C clip that you remove, and the whole assembly will slide right out. BTW: This would be the perfect time to change the fluid/filter, because you would have to drop the pan to get the fluid out anyway.
Regal_GS_1989
Also, You may need to get the computer reprogrammed to compensate for the lower FDR ratio.
joey b
Also, You may need to get the computer reprogrammed to compensate for the lower FDR ratio. No "May" about it. You will need a chip.
birdman
so basically if i get a diff and with the sun gear on it from a 3.1 car all i have to do is swap it? and as far as getting to it i will have the motor out during the change, thats the reason i asked, if it was easy (which it seems to be) i plan on doing that and possibly a slightly higher stall converter. and pat thanks for the offer, when it gets to be spring and the project starts to take place i may come grab it for the parts. i also plan on getting a chip for the new motor so ill talk to ben when i do the fdr swap and have him program for that as well. thanks for all the info guys and if you have any more advice please let me know. That trans(my old one) has a lot of good parts in it. It has a higher stall convertor and the 3.73 gears already equipped, but is "supossed" to have a shit kit(the fucker shifted hard as hell, so I believe it). patgizz
yeah i'd throw new clutches and seals in it and go. not sure if the t/c is available though, ben might be getting it.
birdman
well im not a trans expert by any means so going throught and replacing stuff i have no idea how to replace (ie. clutches and seals) wouldnt seem like a good idea for me. Alos my tranny works great and still shifts very firm, its never given me a problem, so i think im sticking with it but yea when spring gets around ill get ahold of ya pat and well work somthing out. thanks for all the info everyone.
