Slade901
I've just replaced the transmission filter and fluid on my 1990 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme yesterday. However, I've always manage to break the tranny filter plastic housing next to the metal seal and I have to pry out the metal seal out with flat screw drive and hammer and then I am able to grab the lip of the metal seal and pull it out. Is there any specialty tools or special way I need to remove the tranny filter?
Redfox340
Not really. Usually, I leave the metal seal there. It doesn't hurt anything... just take the new one off the new filter. I've gotten many out by rotating the filter back and forth while pulling down. If it snaps off at the neck, grab some needle nose pliers and pull out the rest of the plastic. - RedFox340

Baddflash
Yes getting the seal out can be a big problem, although it is not recommended that you leave the old seal in there. It is a seal and it's very important that it doesn't leak at all for this will starve the tranny of fluid and take it out quickly, I've seen this first hand. Also you have to be careful not to damage the trans housing, this will cause you a lot of problems.
