I have been having a problem moving my shifter from park, the button is very difficult to depress when moving from park. I have lubricated the linkage at the transmission and the linkage under the console. Please help.

What's your car's year and model? Column or console shifted (okay, the whole "button" thing kinda gives that away, doesn't it? )

Anyway, I had the same problem on my 95 Regal (w/console shift,) and found it to be the BTSI (Brake Transmission Shift Interlock - the device that prevents you from shifting out of park without your foot on the brake.) I simply removed the BTSI linkage from the shifter assembly and problem solved. I had to remove the upper console to gain access to the bottom of the shifter assembly, where the BTSI resides. Look for what I could best describe as a canister with a rod poking out the end, with said rod attached to the shifter. Simply take a flat-blade screwdriver and pop the "rod" off of the shifter (the "rod" has a ball-and-socket connection.)

I also had the problem on my 92 LeSabre (column shifted) and simply found the BTSI under the dash (attached to the steering column near where it passes through the firewall,) and unplugged the electrical connector running to it. Problem solved...

I have a 1995 Grand Prix wiht console shift.

The upper console you refering to is the console that houses the shft assembly?

Thanks for your help.

The console has 2 pieces. The upper part houses the cupholders and the shift indicator plate. To get it off, first find the "horseshoe" clip on the front of the shift knob and pry it out with a small flat blade screwdriver. Next, open your armrest lid and find the separation line between the 2 halves of the console and pry up. Finagle the rest of the upper console up and away (it helps to shift into Low gear) and you'll see the shifter assembly hidden underneath...

once upon a time in the winter my shifter button decided it was sick of springing back and stayed premintly pressed, i never did figgure out WHY, as i ended up replacing the shift assembly to solve the problem in the end anyhow.
