ya so i blew my transmission today (5-speed getrag 284) only lasted for 3500 miles in my car and had 10 000 km on the rebuild.... so like 12 000 miles and the tranny blew... oh well thank god for spares.... (carnige pics to come tomorrow)

Wow, you put a lot of hard work in your car and things are always breaking. Sorry to hear the bad news.

Damn, I was always under the impression the 284's where made to handle around 350 whp/wtq.

Well, that's disheartening.

i dont think the stage 3 clutch was helping much... maybe my clutxch got a little fucked i dont know... ill be swaping in a new one tomorrow

You'll probably end up grenading that 6spd you were talking about swapping in there too. I think you might want to start considering a beefed up auto.

How many transmissions have you gone through now? I want to say 3 at the minimum now...

What exactly happened? You sure that tranny had only 10km? I mean you got it from that yard in Kitchener right?

As far as I know that's only the second getrag 284 in the car, and the one that was in there a crappy 2nd gear snycro.

Jeff, sorry to hear that the trans let go. :frown: One thing to think about is whether or not it was rebuilt correctly. I know a lot of Fiero guys talk about shiming the differential during rebuilts so the differential doesn twist in the case. What do you think broke??

How did you do it?? Were you haveing fun poping the clutch one to many times LOL. Kiding

Beefed up autos can get very expensive. Especially with the power hes making and the engine work thats going to be done.... Your looking at several thousand dollars to handle 500ft.lbs.tq.

Agreed. Not to mention auto's aren't nearly as fun as shifting for yourself.

Doesn't that 6speed hold less power than the 284? I mean, honestly I would reconsider that swap for maybe a 5speed out of a Cobalt SS with the LSD, or a built 282.

A 282 would be the better idea. Easier and lest costly to rebuild, and you can have parts made for it.

That holds true if you have someone else build it. Built 4T65-E HD's are withstanding 9 second 1/4 mile passes now for a good many runs(there are a few built 4T60-E's that are holding up well behind enough power to run 11's or better also)...so Jeff would easily be covered w/ a built 65-E HD(. They sell all the upgrade parts, so if you can install them yourself, your wallet won't take a huge hit.

What do you mean the limits of a 3.1.....the trannny in it?

Posted

THE TRANNY IS STILL GOOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ya after all those broken axles, mount changing, time and effort, my clutch took a gian shit after only ~4000 miles.... chunks have same off the pucks :( it all makes sense now why the axles kept breaking, a bad clutch can do that i was told but thought nothing of it as the clutch was good for about 2000 miles

well at least i hope the tranny is alright, seems ok, no holes, ect ect.

I think he means how much power a 3.1 can handle. Well... how much money do you want to throw at it? Pick up an aluminum bow tie block with completely custom internals, and your talking serious power it can handle.
