THe_DeTAiL3R
I dropped the pan for the 2nd time since I've owned the car, and the carnage in the pan is similar (but not QUITE as bad) as it looked in 2004... pics are below. Back to the questions: 1. There's an ad in the newspaper for a "3100 GMC" transmission for $100, rebuild 1year ago. Was there ANY other trannys available for a 3100 vehicle (including Grand Ams, etc)? Or just the 4T60e ?? 2. How much would one weigh, and can it fit easily into the trunk? 3. Is it possible to get it "checked out" before having it installed, and if so how much would a "checkup" usually cost? 4. What is the general labor rate for installing a tranny? Here are the pics for your enjoyment, they are dark for some reason. The black shit I had smeared over the pan, pic #3 is what it looked like before I touched anything. I added a larger magnet, dunno if it will help with anything. [
ns87
That really sucks! But you're finger is going to hurt so much tomrrow...I touched that black gunk and it felt like a million tiny metal shavings under my skin for days
Regal_GS_1989
If its from a different platform, I would be curious if the Final drive ratio would be the same as a W. The other difference that i have seen is that some (all?) N body tranny's have 6 shift detents, instead of 7 like your GP has.
THe_DeTAiL3R
So I called and they guy wasn't sure what kinda car... he said he thinks a Lumina (it's his dad's). He said to call back later. And yes there were lots of tiny sharp metal things in that goop! Is that from the clutch or something? Really hard 1-2 shift. Every other shift, including all downshift are good.
CSI_MuNkY
You think there are lots of metal shavings in that... try cleaning out a vaccuumm for a skate sharpening machine! I have to do it once a week where I work... even if I avoid touching the crap I still feel like I was petting a porcupine! Jamie
Brian P
those are hard metal pieces right? That looks a lot like the pieces I recovered when I shredded my reverse reaction drum. But if your tranny still works then it's not that. I give you a lot of credit for being able to keep it going. I know I would have ruined it in short order you should take the old filter apart and see what other goods you can find.
THe_DeTAiL3R
Yeah the last time I took it apart was summer 2004 I beleive. I don't do alot of highway driving, so it's mostly city crunching gears. I'm not exactly easy on the car, but I do let off on the gas when it's the 1-2 shift. Can anyone help me with my questions in the first post? I feel like trading my car in for $1000 at work and getting something newer. I'm really sick of fixing shit all the time, and dumping money into it.

Psych0matt
I need to do mine, althought it'll probably be the first thing i do when it gets warm come springtime
Crazy K
SPEAKER MAGNET!!! FTL they are too weak and big for your application You can get them at some hardware stores... a magent call a neodymium magnet. super strong, do a google search! I used a neodymium slightly smaller than a penny and three time thicker.... for about 30,000 miles in my lumina tranny, and 90% of the metal particles were stuck on it and not the square magnet. get my drift? also if the tranny the person is selling has the tag on it, like it is supposed to, you can at least verify the drive ratio. I used to have a 4t60-e info link but lost it, and it decoded the tag.
97loudcut
mine has a rough 1-2 shift too. I wish I would have knew you were dropping the pan i would have had some pointers for you.
THe_DeTAiL3R
mine has a rough 1-2 shift too. I wish I would have knew you were dropping the pan i would have had some pointers for you. such as?? I've taken it to Mr Transmission for a free road test, they said that it's running too hot and something is slipping inside which tells the tranny to shift at full pressure. As you can see the fluid is fricken burnt, not only did I drop the pan 2 years ago, but also used a pump to suck out about 4-5qts (through the dipstick tube) last year and put in fresh fluid. When I first start driving (engine/trans cold) it shifts fine. That only lasts for a couple blocks though.
Brian P
Pointers? WTF? As to your 1st post, yes there's a ton of different models of 4T60e's mainly the differences are the internal wiring, final drive ratio, drive sprocket ratios, different side pans (you have the structural, and other cars/older models can have just a stamped steel one) etc. Es muy importante to find out. I'd at least get a pic or if you're seeing it in person, get the numbers/codes off the metal tag.
Regal_GS_1989
they said that it's running too hot and something is slipping inside which tells the tranny to shift at full pressure. Something doesn't sound right there. The 4T60E's still use a vacuum modulator to control line pressure, so the computer wouldn't be able to make the trans shift at full pressure. That has me wondering if there isn't some stupidly simple problem thats being overlooked. Posslible bad vacuum modulator?
THe_DeTAiL3R
I've completely plugged the modulator before (well, on my old car.. 4T60) and it would shift hard in all gears, including downshifting, and really hard if you are rolling backwards a little bit and put it into drive. It's only the 1-2nd upshift. I don't know much about trannys
SigEpCutlass
I'm afraid I'll find something that looks similar to that if I open mine up. I really should do mine before this winter because of the mileage.
1990lumina
doesn't the Grand Ams use the 4T40-E or something?? Anyway Dave those are some pretty pictures..I'd definately start the search for another tranny so you can swap when this one explodes...or like you said trade the car in

White93z34
i'm honestly suprised that that trans is still alive quite frankly i remember when you droped the pan for the first time i figgured it would be done for. hopefully that trans in the paper is from a 95' lumina, then you'll be in luck. IRONDOG442
the Grand Am's, Malibu's and the Almighty ALERO use a 4t40e and a 4t45e depending on year in their LD9 (twin can 2.4 liter 4 cylinder) and a 4t60e trans equipped with the 3400 SFI engine.
