roomylumy
I have a friend with a GP with a 3100 in it and the valves are ticking. He is a bit short on cash and I was wondering what all would be involved in taking care of this.. Are they adjustable or is it a bigger job than one would tackle on Saturday aftyernoon? 97loudcut
Pretty much all 3.1's and 3100 have the "lifter tick." The engine is fine and nothing needs replacing. I have had lifter tick for over 30k now and my car runs great. Drop some Lucas in with some 5w-30 oil and see if it goes away. I would only consider it a problem if it occurs when the engine is hott. roomylumy
I haven't heard it when it was hot, but after idling for 20 minutes, it was still there.
Psych0matt
mine has one stubborn one that always ticks if my oil is not topped off. its been ticking for the last week, and i added about 1/4 of a thing of oil, and lo and behold, about 10 minutes later (aka, it warmed up to normal temp) it went away. it usually does that close to oil change time, as i have a small leak
Supreme Cutlass
might want to try a motor flush depending on the shape of the engine
1990lumina
Kerosine flush i've heard helps clean all the shit out and cleans everything up nicely...though I haven't tried it
SigEpCutlass
If both the tranny and engine are in reasonably good condition, your friend has nothing to worry about. I have a little bit of "ticking" either from the lifters or the tranny in my car depending on the weather. If it's really cold and shitty outside, my car will act like an old woman and both will tick. Neither area any cause for immediate alarm, as both conditions have been accepted by GM as not being harmful to the car. It's just an annoyance.
