Robby1870 Posted May 21, 2003 Report Posted May 21, 2003 Okay. Would an EGR block off plate show any performance gains? And, would it cause the car to run bad, cuz the EGR would work? Any insight is welcome Robby Quote
Slade901 Posted May 21, 2003 Report Posted May 21, 2003 Well, it might help the car performance. As I mentioned on other posts. My 1990 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme did have a problem staying running when the engine was warm. The technician simply solved it by placing a block off plate and did not tell me much about it. It took me 4-5 years later on during my research and found that they just by-passed the EGR by placing an EGR Block-OFF plate. I paid $250+ for that which I could have done myself but I did not know at that time. The EGR is suppose to lower the combustion temperature by introducing a recyled hot gases back to the intake so that with its presence, the there would be less combustion. The EGR would close/open depending on the load and condition. Bad EGR that just opens would just let hot gases enter the intake all the time and engine performance suffers and with my car, it just keeps on dying. With the EGR using an EGR Block-Off Plate, it won't be introducing hot gases and the combustion temp would not lower. The combustion temp would only lower by the amount of incoming air and adjusting the fuel introduction on the fuel injection as commanded by the computer/sensors . I would assume then that you gain performance. The EGR's presence just lowers the combustion temp and help emission. If you still have the cat then it's the cat's job taking care of the emissions by burning unburned gases. Quote
Guest TurboSedan Posted May 21, 2003 Report Posted May 21, 2003 that's what i'm going to do when i get my 3.1 turbocharged. i'm going to have the crossover pipe welded shut and a blockoff plate installed, and then probably have a custom chip burned for non-EGR. the '85 350 SBC in my '81 Malibu has an EGR blockoff plate, but i went non-CCC with the Q-jet carb and distributor so i had to block the EGR and plug the lines going to the exhaust manifolds. i doubt there is really much of a performance gain, i'm just doing it to keep it simple and avoid buying a new TGP EGR. someone once said that it could promote detonation, but the turbo dodges didn't have EGR so i don't see why i need it. joshua Quote
GnatGoSplat Posted May 21, 2003 Report Posted May 21, 2003 Your car could potentially run bad, I believe the spark timing is more advanced when EGR is on since combustion temps are lower. Blocking off the EGR will potentially invoke some knock retard. This won't really hurt anything, just decreases performance. The chip could certainly be tuned to run optimal with no EGR. I think Ben already has chips with EGR turned off. Quote
