Starter Studder ATTN SLICK!

I am starting to think Slick was right about my starting problems. He said my starter was starting to go out, and today and a few other times my starter will studder. It will crank and then shut off with power still going to the starter. And then it just kept cranking.....so I am pretty sure Slick was right, it probably is shot and has a lot of flat spots in it. Any ideas? Also, if someone knows how to put a starter on my dad and I will tackle this. Secondly, sorry to Slick whom I ignored about this posible problem.

Disconnect battery. Jack car up. Put car on jack stands. Crawl underneath, remove plastic shield (if it's even there, I believe held on by a bolt or two). Remove the 2 bolts that hold the starter. Remove the nuts that are holding the electrical connections in place(and do not mix the two up!). Fannagle the starter out of there (removing the oil filter makes a lot more room for this to happen).

Pick up a 2000+ 3100/3400 starter. It's lighter and smaller. Installation is just the reverse, except easier because the newer ones are lighter and smaller.

Yep, like I said though, get one from a newer 3100/3400 equipped car. Like a grand am, monte carlo, impala, etc... Hell, I think the 4 banger starters are the exact same as the V6's as well. They might be a bit more expensive though, but well worth it.

Other then being smaller and lighter do they last longer??

Not totally sure. I think I've read they are high torque or high stall convertors though.

There are tons of threads about these newer starters though. Just don't use the search function, it blows.

Didn't we all say it was the starter? I think I was the first to mention it actually.

When I replaced my starter I went to the parts store and looked at a bunch of different ones. THEY ARE DIFFERENT FOR DIFFERENT MODELS. IIRC- The smallest one I found was for a 99 Malibu w/3100. I'm pretty sure though all 2000+ have the small one for sure. Believe it will be quite a bit smaller.

Yeah, and they are high torque

I've been telling him to replace his starter since he first started having problems with it. And repeated it in every damn thread he brought up.

Yeah, Slick you did. I'm sorry for not listening but you have good info so I won't make that mistake again. So, what does high torque mean? That it turns the motor harder to make it start faster?

Torque is twisting force, so if something has more torque it means it has more twisting force or power.

Ever tried to turn a motor over by hand? Yeah, it sucks.
