i dont think it is restrictive enought to make any noticeable gains... and you might run into issues with the sensor, it is there to clean up the airflow for better reading

Don't bother. Lots of people get incorrect MAF readings by removing it (poor performance, poor gas milage). It's there for a reason. Leave it be.

x2 and it protects the sensor, which could easily be damaged and must be replace to the tune of $$$$$
