Z34-5speed
I was just wondering which years of the LQ1 would be the best match for the Getrag 284, in a Lumina Z34. I have just had a brand new 284, clutch, pressure plate, and T/O bearing installed on my Z. I was just wondering if the newer LQ1s with the better top end would be better than the older ones, in case my motor takes a shit. digitaloutsider
I really don't think it's a worthwhile swap unless, like you said, you blow the motor. Even then, I'd only source a 96-97 if that was the only one I could find. There's not really enough advantages of the 96-97 engine (unless you're considering using the OBD-II system right along with it) to warrant the swap. IMHO, of course. Z34-5speed
Ok, thanks. I was just wondering if there were any advantages to the newer motors. Kyle
LukeZ34
Our 1991 GTP has a 96 DOHC in it, but it has the original 91 intake setup still. It's got some decent get-up-and-go to it, but I've never driven a 91-93 5-speed DOHC to compare it to.
AWeb80
96-97's have better top end....the tq curve as moved to the right about 1Krpms i think.
99RegalGS
If I was to choose an LQ1 it would be the 96,97 engine. Better intake, redesigned exhaust ports, higher compression.... And yes, the 96,97 LQ1 are more topend so IMO it would be best with the 284.
JakeMetz63
*sigh* why did I have to rush my engine swap and settles for my 94 intakes on my 96 LQ1?
Psych0matt
*sigh* why did I have to rush my engine swap and settles for my 94 intakes on my 96 LQ1? thats what I did, I like it. good thing about it though, is that all you have to do is the topend swap
z34_nut
this is a great question on 60* v6.. certain years even have better cams.
Psych0matt
from what Ive read up on, '94 cam's are the most agressive. eventually, I want to swap on a 96 intake to make the engine all '96 except '94 cams
Crimson Fury Z
is the loss of the newer ones' non-interface still an issue?
Psych0matt
i still don't think anything has been confirmed or denied as to wether or not theyre interference or not, at least not to my knowledge. but ive heard people say earlier ones are, too
Crimson Fury Z
i've always wondered why no MC 3.4'ers haven't tried to use a 284. some make it so! chop! chop!
