Lowering Time

I'm new here and have done a lot of research and looked through many old threads. After all the reading I have done, I have a few questions.

My car is a 1991 Buick Regal. I've been looking for a way to lower it for a while now and I think I've finally figured my stuff out. From what I gather I will need the front set of lowering springs from a monte carlo package. I think I would go with the Intrax springs because they seem like the easiest to get just the front set since the ST springs are no longer available. For the rear I think I would go with a flex-a-form monoleaf or something to that manner. From what I read the company isn't that responsive, so if anybody knows someone else who does these please speak up.

Now my real questions are as follows:

1. When doing all this work is it suggested/needed to replace the shocks? If necessary which ones should I go with?

2. Are these installs something that the average "shade tree" mechanic can do? I can follow directions, have done some motor work on cars, and problem solve very well. I also have the original repair manual that is specific to my make/model. Are there any special tools required to do the job?

Spring compressor, etc.

3. Are there strut tower braces, sway bar, or anything like that I should consider doing first? Anything else I should consider replacing? Anything that I have not listed?

4. For those of you that have done this or have first hand experience what are your thoughts? My goal is to lower the car about 2 inches, achive a better look/stance and improve my handling. Which options are the best? What would you do different? etc.

Thanks,

Nate

1 if you think they are bad replace. I replace the front ones if the car suffers brake dive while stopping. I have used gabriels on the front, without issue(lifetime warentee woot). Members recommend KYB for a stiffer hard ride or monroe sensitrack for a firm but soft and smooth ride.

Myself, I would get sensitracks on the rear. (I would not use gabriels were they can exposed to the elements)

2 yes if you are careful. Spring compressors are a pain, but will be necessary on the front. AZ, among others, rent them. the rear should be easier :) However some may recommend the coil over FFP rears instead of a leaf.

3 Find a 3.4 front sway bar, and add a rear if you don't have one. A 3.4 car rear swaybar might be thicken than the normal bar. You can also add strut tower stiffening braces. the front from a vert, and the rear someone here makes.

4 haven't done it and probably will not.... but get an alignment done once completed. I would probably do the fronts as you have suggested, but use a softer OEM rear spring if I were. (got one already, stupid lummie)

With my car I don't think I even have a front sway bar  All addco offers is an upgraded rear sway bar. Worth while mod?

How about front/rear sway bars, does anyone know which exact ones would fit a Regal?

f that rear monoleaf, tear it out and get a set of ffp coilovers, they are much nicer, lighter, and can be adjusted to match the front. if you get the monoleaf you're stuck if it sits wrong. kyb is the way to go as far as i'm concerned for struts. the ffp's are actually designed for them i think. i managed to do the fronts without spring compressor, but it was a pain in the balls, save the trouble and rent some. after all that is done, then get stb's. aweb80 makes a rear, and you can get a nice one dirt cheap from gm for the front

My FAF spring is 7lbs...and my car rides much better did it did with the stock FE3 spring. I got a 2 1/2" drop. I hear alot of those coil overs are clunky.

Now you've got me wondering, what all is available for STB front and rear for my car? (1991 Buick Regal) Obviuosly DIY, and I see AWeb offers a Rear STB, but what else....I know GMPartsdirect has a single and a double kit for newer w-bodys would that work? Would a dealer be able to get me some? O...and costs cause we all know that can be just as important as looks when you're looking for functionality.

Thanks,

Nate
