93 Z34 + 4T65E-HD?

The old 4T60E has almost had it, I think, and having an axle pull out while moving probably didn't help any. I used to have a '98 GTP and I remember never ever ever having a problem with the tranny, despite an extra 60+HP, and I put a good 30k miles a year on it while I had it. Plus, it had that super cool Performance Shift button (everyone loves a button that says Performance). So, here's my question: mechanically, what is neccessary to swap a 4T65E-HD in place of the 4T60E? Computer interface is covered and NOT an issue.

All you should need are the inner axles from the car that you get the 4T65-E out of to physically get the transaxle in there properly(you have to combine your outer axles w/ the inners from a 4T65-E equipped car). You planning on using the aftermarket controller that's available for the 4T65-E transaxle or what?

I have tried finding some more info on this but everyone seems to think its nuts because the controllers are $850+, I even looked them up before posting...

Since most agree that is can be dropped in, thats the not very help. Where is the transmission mount at? Would it be lucky enough to be where the 4T60 trans have them. Any ideas on what to do for axles? This would be a fun project for out TGP as well...need more info!

Brian, the lower trans mount is in the same place, no problems there. I'd like to compare our stock axle length to a 4T60 outer/4T65-E inner axle combo sometime soon. If they're close in length, we shouldn't have issues. I know the guys that swap L67's in pre-97 cars and race them have problems w/ axle breakage due to length though...so it's definitely something that should be looked at. Someone over on clubgp has a source for custom length axles for L67 swapped cars that have solved axle breakages as far as I know(the guys using them are running low 12 second ET's for what it's worth).

I plan to use a controller from Powertrain Control Solutions. I've heard positive things about it.

Yea, it's $850 with custom wiring harness, and about $1400 with paddle-shifter. I'm sure I'll have tranny and axles loooong before i get that though...could get another w-body for that price.

Yes, there is a problem with the axles but everything else bolts up perfectly. It isn't so much that the axles break on swapped cars.... when the suspension travels up and down the axle moves in and out of the trans just a little... this is normal. When you swap to the 4T65-E and make the axles using the 65's inners and the 60's outers and shaft, the axles are slightly shorter. Thus when the suspension is all the way extended the axles tend to pull out of the transmission.

There is a guy on L67swap.com that can get custom lengthened axles, but many members who have lowered their car say hat they no longer have problems with it.

Thats interesting, do you have any other details? Since I have not much of a clue on axles, I would assume that 60-E and non E 60s have similar axles.
