Guest Anonymous Posted May 17, 2003 Report Posted May 17, 2003 I'm going to be pulling the motor out of my '89 GP this week. What is the easiest way? -Out the top with tranny? -Out the top without tranny? And could you give a description of what all needs to be unhooked/removed besides the obvious things? Anything that I should replace while the motor is out that is easier to get to? If I use the motor out of the '90 STE I bought I'm going to just pull the tranny with the motor and swap it as a unit. Robby1870 Posted May 17, 2003 Report Posted May 17, 2003 The easiest, I would think would be out the top WITH tranny. Things to replace, O2, oil pump drive O-ring, oil pan gasket (mine leaks), timing cover gasket (if you get ambitious, I know mine leaks) subframe mounts, maybe tranny mounts. Be careful when taking out the motor and trans. Im assumin it has an auto tranny, so, be careful of the master cylinder, the 4T60 is a tight fit when coming out b/c of the master cylinder, but it can be done. Maybe rewrap all your wires if your current plastic is brittle. Robby Quote
Brian P Posted May 17, 2003 Report Posted May 17, 2003 Raise car on jackstands, remove subframe bolts in a criss cross fashion, when you get to the 4th bolt, be ready to whip your hand back quick. Hey, you wanted easy..... Actually I say leave the trans in, you wont have to go thru the crap of disconnecting the axles and cooler lines to the radiator, and hopefully the one from the STE is even any good Quote

GnatGoSplat Posted May 19, 2003 Report Posted May 19, 2003 That is true, and that's how junkyards usually do it, but 99% of people don't have a lift. Quote
Brian P Posted May 19, 2003 Report Posted May 19, 2003 The easiest is when junkyards use that crane and grab it and rip it out just before crushing the car. I saw that personally and it's awesome Quote

No local junkyard around here has anything like that. Quote
