Crazy K
Is there any difference between a 96 3.1 tranny and a 3100 tranny? the 96 3.1 liter engine is called and marked as such 3100. it will be a 4t60-e transmission. why are you pondering this question? 19Cutlass94
Maybe he means 3.1MPFI = 4T60. 3100SFI = 4T60-E......
zx7
Well as stated in another topis I bought a 96 cut 3100 from a friend who had just had the tranny replaced. The Original tranny that was in it had Drive with the circle around the d for over drive and then 3-2-1. The one they replaced it with only goes D then shifts down two othe gears, but while driving I feel the car shift 4 times. That being said I know it is a 4 speed tranny. So in my quest to find out what car the new tranny came out of I went to the guy that did the work. He stated that the car was gone and he cant remember excatly what car it came out of but he pulled the receipt and said it came out a 3.1 and not a 3100. I said I thought they were the same and he said no they are different engines. Not knowing much about the Cutlass and not wanting to look like a idiot I didnt disagree any further. The main reason I wanted to know about the tranny is because I am getting a surge when the car hits about 70 and RPMs are between 2-3 grand. If i put my foot on the brake a little it stops. CRAZY K helped me on the other topic and stated maybe it was TORQUE CONVERTER LOCK. Well I had already replaced the VSS I just want to make sure I bought the right one for this tranny, if there is a difference in the tranny and the VSS. Regal_GS_1989
AFAIK, Some 4T60-E trannys Had a shift pattern something like P-R-N-OD-3-2 or P-R-N-OD-3-1, Not too sure which one, But they only had 6 shift detents, instead of the 7 like the tranny that would have been in the car. It is possible that a shop put in a tranny that only had the 6 detents instead of 7.
Crazy K
there should be a tag on the right rear of the tranny, facing backwards, right below the alternator. You can see it if with the wheel turned far to the left, and using a flashlight and a mirror. And you will have to wipe it clean . the tag is about 2x3 inches. this tag will best desribe the codes on the tranny. the most important code is a 4 digit code with a number followed by 43 letters like: 5AFW see if you can find it. I have a link I can post later if you have trouble.... It took me several attempts to locate my tag, and I know where it is.
