Q-Ball
Basically, the rear mounts arent cheap. I was wondering If anything I could salvage from swapping struts? Boots are cheap, I'll just get new ones.
94CutlassSLCoupe
i did, but when i changed my rear struts, my car had 21,000 original miles chances are they are rusted to shit and also really beat up
Q-Ball
So you think it would be better just to go all new?
DiscoStudd
Well you could keep the mounts, but this is what you'll end up with: Depending on how crusty your old struts are, you might not even be able to remove the old mounts from them anyway. If the retaining nut is rusted solid to the strut shaft, then fahgeddaboudit!
Q-Ball
Ha, mine probably look like that anyways. Being a 92 with winters here.
DiscoStudd
I think the mounts were only like $24 apiece at TireRack, so you'd be crazy not to replace them...
White93z34
i forget what i paid for my mounts, but it was worth it to me just in the fact that i didn't have to mess with gettting the old rusty hardware free of the struts
Q-Ball
Front mounts were like 25. Rears I was quoted for 75 Canadian Well Basically this is what I would get with Tax for 600 4 KYB GR-2's 4 new mounts and 4 new boots. Does this seem a little bit high? 535 US. DiscoStudd
Yeah, $535 sounds too high. IIRC, I paid right around $300 for all 4 KYB struts, mounts, and boots from TireRack (including shipping...)
White93z34
well you really don't need 4 new boots, only 2 are needed, as changeing the front ones have to have the strut assembly out of the car and disasembled as i recall. i think i spent around $350ish total, i'm not at home so i don't have access to my recipts. i got everything localy using my shop discount. 1990lumina
I'd look at your rear mounts first...mine seems brand new when I changed my rear struts at 152000km...everything came apart easy, no rust at all

If you only plan on changing the front strut cartridges through the tops of the strut towers, then the front boots are unnecessary... Pontiac6KSTEAWD
You dont need the front strut boots. They will be staying in the car inless you plan on going on out on your car and replacing springs and all that. Just in case you didnt know, the front struts come out thru the top hole on the strut tower while the car has the wheels on the ground. Its one of the things I love about w's. Dont have to deal with all that crap.

Still, thats going to save quite a bit. Compared to my 600 with tax already. Am I missing anything, or should I make the order?
Pontiac6KSTEAWD
I would see if you could shop around a little to see if you can find a canada place that wont charge as much on the shipping and shit. But if whoever you are going thru works it out to be under 350 shipped, I would say you probly are pretty good...
CSI_MuNkY
Yeah, you won't find cheaper around here Jason. If you were quoted $600 for everything (including 4 boots) your doing better than I did... I was quoted $400 for JUST the struts, no mounts or anything like that, and I went to quite a few different places. Believe it or not the SpeedShop by my place wasn't the best price. There is a place on Wellington Road near Horton that gave me a better price, but it still wasn't great. If your getting quoted $286 from Tire rack thats gonna be $320 CDN, whats the shipping gonna cost? if its $80 or less then your still saving $200! Mind you our 'wonderful' government may rape you at the boarder. Saving $200 will almost give you the extra money you need for that torsion bar too! White93z34
i never eplaced my front mounts, mabie next time, they looked good enough to me when i did mine, so no need to replace what isan't needed. also you DO NOT need 4 boots, rear ones will do just fine. Pontiac6KSTEAWD
The only thing other than the struts he needs up front is the bump stops. They seem to disentegrate over time. Find a 96 or so W in a junk yard and get them there. 2 bucks from a junk yard vs 60 from a dealer.
White93z34
when i got my new boots it included brand new bump stops.
Pontiac6KSTEAWD
He isnt replacing his front boots thou. Thats alot more work than I think he wants to be involved with.
