rockfangd
my 94 cutty se with a 3100 makes a clunk when you put it in gear , thought maybe it was my exhaust but i see now that the negine moves quite alot. i have already changed the 2 top dog bone mounts so now it has to be either the tranny mount or the lower hydraulic motor mount, help. too little money to screw it up.lol
Crazy K
did you replace the both top end engine mounts, with new mounts? I've seen a few people use used ones, duh! best thing to do, is with the hood open, rock the car forward and back and see if you can isolate the noise and/or motion. 19Cutlass94
Lower engine mount. I had the same problem. except you could clearly hear it was the lower engine mount. Alot of times thje hydraulic mount will leak fluid and cause it to go bad.
5speedz34
I would replace both personally.
SigEpCutlass
I have the exact same problem and I know it's one of the two lower mounts. Until I have the time and patience to deal with it, I will just turn my stereo up a little.
jdcutty
Watch the motor and have someone else in the car going back and forth from reverse to drive, and see which side of the motor moves more.

rockfangd
well i never do used always new and usually oem. prolly gonna have to do both. i was told that the clunking noise means the tranny mount but the other lower mount is an all too common prob

But I fixed the clunking made by shifting on two of my cars.... by installing the bolts that some lame-ass mechanic forgot to install on the engine mount! I'll have to take a look at that when I get a chance. Maybe I'll be lucky and just need to get some new bolts.

1990lumina
napa has them at a decent price IMO
rockfangd
well i found out what the clunk noise is, the dogbons are bad again because of the bad hydraulic mount putting al the pressure on them. the clunk is the dogbone smashing the bolt because the bushing broke, lovely
rockfangd
ok so i am a little worried because i have heard its easy and i have heard it is difficult but today at napa i just ordered both the tranny mount solid and the lower motor mount also solid, the guy told me that honestly there isnt a noticeable difference and that after looking at my mess he said anything would be better lol, hydraulic mess everywheres ugh
Stevo
On the 2.8-3.1 I just looked it up. There is the one mount which appears to be located in the front of the engine near the crank pulley. If you can find a solid area of the engine block which you can place a jackstand under the motor with the car 'slightly' elevated. You can then use a jack to 'ever-so-slightly' lower the car thus pushing the engine up taking the weight off the lower mount. Unbolt the bracket and mount. Install the mount on the bracket and reinstall. ****ALWAYS BE CAREFUL WHEN RAISING AND LOWERING THE VEHICLE*** You dont want the jackstand to slip and go through the trans pan or oil pan. I would use the factory jack to facilitate raising and lowering the car because hydraulic jacks seem to quickly jump when you let them off even carefully. At least the factory jack allows for a steady raising and lowering. As for the Transmission mount. Do the same but the removal of the bracket is not required. I would replace the engine mount first the the transmission mount. Can anyone back up or correct what I just said?
rockfangd
yeah i always always use the factory jacks when doing any projects like this.so any idea about how long of a job it could be
Stevo
You can do it in couple of hours depending on how rusty the bolts are. I'd say an hour a side. But then again I had a bugger of a time with trailing arms. Took me 4 hours to free them up and take them off.
rockfangd
well great news is that i just got done changing all 4 motor mounts on the 94 cutty and it was about as easy as the serp belt just alot more prepwork involved for these. the job took me 4 hours all together, ( about 2 hrs for the motor mount about 1.5 hrs for the tranny mount and like a half for the dogbones), and it wasnt difficult. the most time consuming thing was lifting the car and taking the whees off, and lining up the new mounts with the holes.. The biggest tip i can give anyone that wants to tackle a job like this is that of disconnecting the dogbones before trying to jack up the engine. this will make the job go much smoother. I never realized how much of a difference new mounts would make until i took a before and after pic. and realized that my engine doesnt sag to the firewall anymore. The only question i have to ask is is it possible to get more torque and power after doing this job, because the engine looks much higher up than it it did before
rockfangd
ok so i have another question i meant to mention while i was working on the lower motor mount i saw a little liquid behind the bottom pulley. it was easily visible but a very small amount. Water pump? should i be worried
rockfangd
not quite sure but i was told the water pump is an easy job on the 3100
