19Cutlass94 Posted September 12, 2006 Report Posted September 12, 2006 I bought the strut tools to change the front struts in my car. After realizing that the dude that did it before just tightened everything with an air gun ( yeah that was real fun trying to get that off, until my dad was like lets try this, and breaks out the air gun, go figure ) well all the noise that I had going over every bump is now, finally, gone *knock on wood* What it actually turned out to be is the guy never put the shims in under the strut cartrige nut. So therefore the strut was not tight. That and I had a strut that was leaking, but thats ok I got a free one. For my first time doing this, it went just fine. ( except for the fact that everything was tightened by an air gun ) Now I feel safer going down the road, knowing that my wheels are wobbling over every bump. Quote
Q-Ball Posted September 12, 2006 Report Posted September 12, 2006 Good stuff! I plan to do my struts very soon too. But all of them. Quote
SigEpCutlass Posted September 12, 2006 Report Posted September 12, 2006 What do these "shims" look like? I'm wondering if I have the same problem on the right side front (it's always been noisier), or if I have a bad strut now about 33,000+ miles later. Quote
19Cutlass94 Posted September 12, 2006 Author Report Posted September 12, 2006 The shims are just like a washer that goes right on top of the strut, but below the strut cartrige nut. Maybe 1/8 to 3/16 thick Id have to say. Quote
intern8tion9l Posted September 13, 2006 Report Posted September 13, 2006 dude its about time. that noise was def annoying. sounded like there was a sea lion under your hood every time you hit a bump Quote
