Calvin
My GP has a bit of up/down play in the steering column when I wiggle the wheel up and down. I have seen this in some other 88-93 cars in the JY, so I know its not uncommon.... is it repaired like the Fiero thing, are there just some bolts to tighten up somewhere in the steering column? Thanks Kurt

jimmy91444
If what "Slick"said does not correct your probleme , Its probaly inside the colomn itself, there is 4 bolt holding the column togeter, and some time they come loose. White93z34
i've been fighting this problem for a good while now, my column gets like that, theres one torx bolt way down in the column that comes loose, tighten that up, but do what i didn't do and put some good red threadlocker on it and let it sit overnight. that *should* fix your problem. 1990lumina
Is the play in the column, or the tilt mechanism?? I dunno if this is the same, but the wheel on my Lumina is lose as hell, always has been....I always thought it was wear in the tilt mechanism, but myabe it's two completely different things?? White93z34
its the tilt mechanism, over years of people getting in and out of the car and hanging on the steering wheel to get in and out, plus the people that will let the release up so the column slams to the top before they get out, it takes is toll. mine just keeps coming loose, next time i tear it down, i'm gona use some good threadlocker on the torx bolt. i'm not going to get into how to tear the column down, its been discussed here before so a search should yeild those directions. mabie next time i'll do a write up on it. GP1138
I hate it when people do that when they get out of cars, just let the wheel slam to the top like that. I never reset the wheel when I get out, I just leave it.
slick
I hate it when people do that when they get out of cars, just let the wheel slam to the top like that. I never reset the wheel when I get out, I just leave it. Not me, I love tilt wheel. My knees and legs always smack the steering wheel that is down when I tried to get out of the car. I also loved tilt wheel because when I pulled up somewhere and I had to take out my wallet(drive-thru), I could put the wheel in the up position, and I would have 10x more room to get my wallet out.. When I had my w-body's, I ALWAYS utilized the tilt steering. That is one of my few complaints I have about my Acura. Granted, it has telescoping wheel(so I can pull it out all the way so my knees clear the steering wheel), I prefer tilt wheel.
GP1138
Oh I love the tilt wheel, I just never really move it that often. I just leave it where it's comfortable.

GnatGoSplat
Oh I love the tilt wheel, I just never really move it that often. I just leave it where it's comfortable. Same here. I set everything to precisely where I like it, then I don't touch it ever again. The tilt position, position of the mirrors, seat position, even the vents are set precisely and I get annoyed if anyone moves them. I wish my car was like my dad's with memory seats and power memory tilt/telescope wheel.
