joey b
So the TGP has a tighter turning ratio, correct? What would be the downfalls and advantages of getting one of those? I was quoted 180 w/ 80 core from autozone. Will it include all 4 tierods or just the inners?

GutlessSupreme
The TGP has a quicker turning ratio, but actual turns will be wider.
mfewtrail
Steering racks come w/ inner tie rods only. I would try to somehow confirm that you would be getting the TGP/early Cutlass rack(14.0:1 ratio) instead of the standard FE3 rack.
Brian P
x2 on inners only. Usually the reman racks aren't separated by turning ratio, and if they are you're at the mercy of the rebuilder if he knew there even was a difference. Couldn't you just cross reference the part numbers?
Brian P
you could, but I've bought racks or sold rack jobs where the part # says one thing, but driving with it says another. For example I put a rack in a mid '90s Park Ave, which was to have the easy turning low ratio rack (according to the car and the part #) and ended up being the sport rack after testing it in the car. Brian P
yeah from there. The # of turns from lock-to-lock can tell you the ratio in most cases. Also the level of difficulty to turn the steering wheel, but that can change even just from a worn p/s pump, but yeah.
White93z34
if you want a "proper" rack goto the dealer, any parts rebuilder just treats all our racks as one, so its a grab bag on what you actually get.
joey b
what would be the possibilities on the rack I may get. This is a matter of 180 or 520 dollars. How many styles did they make?
Crazy K
can't the input shaft on a loose rack be turned with a wrench from lock to rock to reveal the nature of the rack? and what part(s) make the difference? Do all the different ratio racks use the same body for the rack?

White93z34
like i said any reman that a autoparts store sells is more then likely gona be a grab bag. like autozone lists a "z34" rack and a regular rack for my car, nice but its the same part number for both.... 1990lumina
whatever reman my Lumina has in it is awesome...I think it is 2.5 turns lock to lock...it has great feel to it too.....so not all remans are bad
joey b
could I use a wrench to turn from lock to lock? How would the parts store like that?

I'd have to agree. I bought a reman rack for my Sunbird a few months back. Definitely not the same one I took out... the new one has more power assist and a bit more turn lock-to-lock. GPX
I googled steering racks and came up with a few good hits. For example this link http://www.steeringrack.com/product_info.php/cPath/1/products_id/3808 is for a reman Z34 2.5 turn rack for just $120! They also list the standard ratio racks too. You'd hope there was a difference. prices are the same.
joey b
I have the pressure sensor since I have a 95, so the lowest ratio I got was 2.75. It was that or 3 1/8. I got an AC Delco reman for 109+50 core. Pretty happy with that. Then I can be more certain that I have that ratio too. Got it from a place nearby that sells ONLY AC Delco parts. I can get a really good discount from there and really like going there to get my parts. My rapidfires were only 4 bucks each there. 6 everywhere else. On my 2.25 rack all I did was plug it with the cap-off they give you when you buy a reman rack.
joey b
sensor for sure. Replaced it tonight. Not too tough of a job really.
