Okay, so I helped my son change rear pads on the '94 today. This is the second time I've done them in 10k miles. Inside pad wears out very fast.

Anyway, it seems the slide in the drivers rear caliper is stuck. Not the one with the bolt, but the one that pivots up to get the pads out. I had to hit the caliper really hard to get it to swing up, and it has no movement back and forth. Not even after taking an 8lb hammer on it. I went ahead and turned the piston in and got the new pads in and greased up anyway, thinking it would break free, but it has not.

He drove it around the block and it has that unmistakable smell, and the wheel was very hot. So anyway, I'm just wondering if anyone has any pointers on getting it free, or is it time for a new caliper? How does this slide come out anyway? There are no bolts...

you just slide it all the way off the back...I would just pick up a new caliper for $45, it should come with a new slide bolt to replace the one in there that's probably very rusty. Or else go to a junkyard and find one that slides nice and take the whole thing, bracket and all

Yeah, I think I'm going to need a new one now. I got this one free with a torch and PB Blaster, but the boot is shot, and the slide still is a bit sticky.

Where did you buy yours from?

I bought one for my dad's blue Quad4 Cutlass Supreme from Advance Auto because the free one i got from the junkyard had a busted off bleeder screw...just make sure you pull the bracket for the parking brake cable off before you turn the core in.

With how notorious the pre '94 calipers are for seizing, I would just get a new caliper. I know the '94+ should be better, but it's probably more trouble than it's worth to fix it, and it could very seize again on your son.
