Supreme Cutlass
Search, this has been asked ALOT. It's very safe, as long as you don't do a flush, just change what's in the pan.
BIGBULS
There's really nothing wrong with doing a flush either as long as you don't use the little additive bottles that are included with a "flush kit". THEY are the real killers when a trans flush is performed...........especially the "shudderguard" crap............makes the clutches slip and BOOM!..........no more tranny. The good thing about a pan drop though is that you can check out how much clutch material is sitting in the bottom of the pan and/or see if there is anything else big and bad along with it (such as hunks of metal or a broken up thrust washer or something)..............plus, doing a pan drop yourself is much cheaper than doing a flush somewhere. *I* would do a pan drop first and check things out in the pan, add the required 6-6.5qts (but NOT turn the car on or get the level perfect yet), and then, IF everything was in good shape, drop the cooler return line, stick it in a bucket and run the car in Park while simultaneously ading ATF through the dipstick until I got all the old, brown, nasty fluid out (you'll get the brown, old crap from the cooler and torque convertor first, THEN the nice new red stuff you added to the pan so that you know when to stop)............it's the poor man's flush, but lets you check stuff out first, and THEN go onto step 2 (if all is good). This way you get the benefit of a new filter AND all new fluid. It's more fluid, and hence more cash though.
ns87
Yeah deffinately search as this has been covered. Clean the black sludge looking stuff off the magnet (metal shavings). But don't touch them like I did...lol. They get in your skin and hurt for a long time I used the cheap Advanced Auto Transmission fluid and it seems fine, but my car is a lot older so who knows. Turbo231
Yep, covered to death...check the FYI. And flushing, that's extra...just a pan fluid change should be fine, especially if everything is already running well. DIY article that I always shamelessly plug even though I no longer own the car: http://members.aol.com/regal231/xmission.htm

I've used it once before and it worked well to guide me though it. Gotta do it again real soon though.
