firefighter_0029
I have a friend that has a Monte Just like mine except it is a 97. He has a leak in the distibuter block off plate and uses about 3 quarts of oil a week. Can someone give me some advice on how to fix the problem. It's at his Dad's house now and he's afraid to take the back Cam Carrier off, Because he had the motor apart in it once to replae the Head Gasket and couldn't get it back in time until he took it to the Dealer and charged him almost $600 to put it back in time. Do you just use cam hold down tools to hold the time in place to take the Carrier off to replace the gasket? Or is there another way? He didn't really like my idea of trading it in on a 98 with a 3800 and he really likes the car he just doesn't want to put alot more money in it to fix it. GnatGoSplat
On mine, I had the LIM out so I had more room to work. I pulled up up as far as it would go and cleaned it with lacquer thinner. Then I slipped a 1/16" thick O-ring over the head of it. It had to stretch quite a bit, but luckily didn't break. Then I squished some RTV under the head of it too (extra insurance). Then I tightened the clamp down just finger tight, let it cure overnight, then tightened it down hand-tight. I didn't want to tighten it to spec because that would probably destroy my O-ring or RTV gasket. Anyhow, it's been holding for 4yrs.
firefighter_0029
So you can get to it with just the upper and lower manifolds off?
GnatGoSplat
Yeah, I think it only lifts up about 1/4", but that's enough to slip a skinny O-ring on and squeeze RTV under the head. I don't remember if removing manifolds is mandatory. I just happened to have the LIM off to replace the LIM gasket and figured I might as well take care of the leak while I had it apart. firefighter_0029
Awesome thanks!! I haven't been down there to look at it yet but he was just asking me questions that I really couldn't answer, because I've never had a 3.4 apart. White93z34
search around, but since i like you i'll post it again. what i'd do. get a distributer gasket for a 88' 2.8. and grind a small piece of the aluminum away from the pump drive shaft itself on the top so you can pull it up further. clean the mating surfaces real good and cut the gasket so you can slip it around and coat everything with black RTV good, you may even want toget 2 gaskets for this and be sure the cuts are facing oposite sides. let it set real good and i don't see it ever being a problem again. corya
white93z34 thats exactly what i do on the 3.4s all the time it works very well and saves my customers alot of money make sure the gasket cuts are 180degrees from each other and it is an easy swap if you are not pulling the intake for any reason this can easily be done by removing just the air box and cross-over pipe......... joey b
http://www.cardomain.com/ride/473859/6 Good luck not removing the LIM to do the job. I don't even see that being possible. Removing the LIM is not even much of a task. Especially on a 97.
jdcutty
Isn't there a write-up somewhere on this?
