FastSE2DR
So this weekend I picked up a 94 Regal 4dr 3800 with leather. It cost me a whopping $200. It runs great but it has one problem that scares me a little bit. The tranny slips(I knew about it when I bought it) when I idle for a few mins at a stop light or a drive thru(That was bad!). It will either move really slowly and try really hard to catch or it will appear to be in neutral. Once I'm moving the tranny shifts great all the way through the gears etc. I drove it 400miles this weekend actually and it was great. It slipped on me in the drive thru yesterday and it really made me nervous about the car in traffic. If I shut it off and start it again it usually works. I haven't checked the fluid on it at all and I will do that tonight. I would way rather put a tranny in this car than my GP because it seems to be a more solid car. Do you guys think its pretty much completely shot or would it be something as simple as low fluid or the pump? It's a 4T60E as well correct? I might be able to steal parts from my GP if it is. 1990lumina
could be low or burned fluid..might want to try to change the fluid (but DON'T flush the tranny)...and see if that helps...since it's justa beater and you didn't pay much dump some Lucas in it too. that can't hurt and i've seen it help quite a few people out befor!! Good luck
DiscoStudd
Lucas won't do a damn thing but sit in the bottom of the pan. Totally not worth the 10 bucks or whatever they charge for it. Will the tranny go back to normal if you pop it in neutral, then back into drive when you're stopped? I believe this problem is caused by a leaky seal inside the valvebody (accumulator seal, perhaps?) Try unplugging the TCC (if the 60-E has one, I know the 4T60/440T4 has one.) We did this on a buddy's car with the non-E 4T60 and it band-aided the "slipping from a complete stop" problem...

I will check it out I guess.
Regal_GS_1989
i used to work in a tranny shop, and i have seen flushing out all of the old fluid do wonders for slipping transmissions. We never used a machine to flush it though. It will require at least 2 people for this job, and a fair bit of fluid. You disconnect the cooler line from the exit side of the trans cooler, and put that into a pail to collect the fluid. Then, start the car up and keep pouring in clean fluid as the dirty stuff is being pumped out. Once the fluid being pumped out is clean, Stop the car immediately, and reconnect the cooler lines. Then you drop the pan, and change the filter. Once thats done, fill it back up to the proper level and be on your way. ** NEVER let the trans pump itself dry, or you risk doing some serious pump/Torque Convertor Damage. **
BIGBULS
I agree with this guy /\ Except, *I* would do the pan drop first to check out what is in the pan, and THEN (without cranking the car over in between) do the flush/fluid exchange if the pan looks ok (no chunks of metal or excessive clutch material)................it also allows you to use less fluid as you can stop as soon as you see nice new red fluid coming out (from when you added the 6qts and change during the pan drop). Still expect to pay for pan+gasket+12-15 (or so) qts of ATF though....
FastSE2DR
I thought it was bad to replace the filter on an old tranny with unknown maintenance history?
FastSE2DR
I noticed it has a whine it now. Could that be the pump or fluid being low? I checked the level yesterday when I noticed it was whining and as far as I could tell it was either right below the X's or a part way up.
