Z34-5speed
Alright today i was going to Wal-Mart. I was on this 4 lane road going 55, that was the speed limit. There was a guy that was passing to the left of me with a line of cars behind him.. We approached a light. It was green. Some stupid lady decided that she had waited long enough at the light and decides to make a left on a red, right into my lane. Remember, i'm going 55 and she pulls in front of me. I'm blocked in and slam on the brakes. I know that i'm not gonna be able to stop and i was in 4th gear so i down shifted to 2nd to get the car slowed down, i didn't want to have the car totaled. So anyway i come about 5 ft from rear ending this b**ch but i do slow down in time. I get all mad and give her the one fingered victory salute. I don't really think about it much the rest of the day. So i go home and get me something to eat. I go back outside to move the car, so i can give it it's weekly wash, and i spot this huge puddle of something under the car. I go and check it and it is brown, doesn't smell anything like motor oil and is coming from my left front axel area. I'm pretty sure this is gear oil from the tranny. I am real pissed now. I then call my uncle in Illinois, he is a real good mechanic, and tell him about it. He thinks i have blown an output shaft seal, you know where the axel connects to the tranny. I hope that it is just this because according to him it wouldn't be that bad to fix. Any1 else have any input to what it might be. I don't want to hear any of the "well you should have done this or not done that...". Help would be nice. Thanks. Kyle
5speedz34
Yeah, sounds like it to me. Personally I'm suprised you got it in to 2nd. Did you rev-match the engine? I'm also suprised all that pressure blew a seal. The only thing is, GM is the only place that I know of for that seal, because I've had to replace it. Also, they might not make it anymore. Good Luck, if you do get one from the dealer, shoot me the part number!
Robby1870
Shitty deal, but much better than wrecking. Especially since almost any amount of damage will total a 1st gen. Seal sounds like a good place to start. Good Luck!
Z34-5speed
Yeah, it got into second. I didn't rev match the motor. I probably over-reved it but i didn't have much time to think about the transmission, it would have wound up in my lap if i hadn't shifted. The car felt fine after that. If it has to come from the dealer i will ask for the number. Kyle
Guest TurboSedan
axle seals are easy to replace. the old ones can be a bitch to remove though. should be available at NAPA for just a few bucks. http://www.turbosedan.com/cutlass/trans/DSC01741.JPG http://www.turbosedan.com/cutlass/trans/DSC01742.JPG http://www.turbosedan.com/cutlass/trans/DSC01743.JPG http://www.turbosedan.com/cutlass/trans/DSC01744.JPG

I don't think Napa carries them.

GP1138
I've done them on an auto tranny, it's not that hard. Getting the suspension and cradle hardware apart to GET to the axle seal is the hard part.

All you have to do is remove the axle not and balljoint, and move the axle out of the way.
