Cam'ron Posted August 26, 2006 Report Posted August 26, 2006 buddy at work offered me his old 92 GP as a winter car (he recently bought a 2001 GA) and all i have to do for it is pay 1/4 of the repair bills to get it running properly. AFAIK the only problem it has other than the body work it needs is it will all of a sudden stall for no apparent reason... turning a corner or sitting at a light it doesnt matter, he said before he bought the GA he couldnt drive it 5 minutes to work without it stalling somewhere along the way... always started up right away again but became a nuiscance (sp?) he has replaced the wires, plugs, and fuel filter already. what else should i look for on it... sounds like a better deal than picking up some shit bagged civic hatchback for a winter runner. terryk2003 Posted August 26, 2006 Report Posted August 26, 2006 umm...it wouldnt have a 3100...deffinatly a 3.1mpfi Quote
Cam'ron Posted August 26, 2006 Author Report Posted August 26, 2006 *fixed yeah sorry it is the 3.1 silly me just like when i described my 2003 as having a 3.4L engine when i first joined here d'oh! Quote
Euro Posted August 26, 2006 Report Posted August 26, 2006 well the 3100's are 3.1 Liters arent they? Quote
Cam'ron Posted August 26, 2006 Author Report Posted August 26, 2006 yes but... any ideas as to where we should look next Quote
terryk2003 Posted August 26, 2006 Report Posted August 26, 2006 its just that when i saw this thread i'm like "someone had to have swapped that in there, cause i know its not stock with a 3100"...i'm also thinking "if i was gonna swap a 3100 in i'd just go with a 3400 instead" Quote
Guest TurboSedan Posted August 26, 2006 Report Posted August 26, 2006 is it just losing power completely? check the battery terminals and ecspecially the auxillary positive post for corrosion. i've heard of this being the culprit with intermittent stalls. it could also be a bad CPS or ICM. Quote
Robby1870 Posted August 26, 2006 Report Posted August 26, 2006 could even be and IAC. Mine went out last year while driving down a road at 35mph. I knew what it was immediately. For a 1/4 of the repair bills....not bad. Keeps the Monte out of winter conditions. Quote
Schudini Posted August 27, 2006 Report Posted August 27, 2006 Check the fuel pump relay (underhood passengers side); that was the problem with my GP, would die intermittently. Quote
THe_DeTAiL3R Posted August 27, 2006 Report Posted August 27, 2006 Sounds like the IAC... same symptoms as my 2.8MPFI had. Clean it and see if it gets better. Quote
Crazy K Posted August 27, 2006 Report Posted August 27, 2006 could possibly be a fuel pump. my 91 lum would stall at stop lights when it became weak.. but mostly after long drives.. I would grab it. And give it a full tune-up: plugs, wires if they look bad, clean out the egr and iac ports.. run injector cleaner through it.... etc etc. and check for vacuum leaks, especially at the check valve below the Master cylinhder, and at the vacum ball. beneath the front left corner of the car. How much is the repair bill, btw? Quote
Cam'ron Posted August 27, 2006 Author Report Posted August 27, 2006 we dont know yet... it is just an idea we are throwing around, he wants to fix it casue he actually likes it better the nthe 01 GA he picked up. he told me that if i pay a 1/4 of the repair bills i can drive it for the winter Quote
greekguy7 Posted August 28, 2006 Report Posted August 28, 2006 It can also be a fuel injector that is out of spec. They should be 12ohms each. If less, replace it. Quote
Crazy K Posted August 28, 2006 Report Posted August 28, 2006 thia came to mind just now.. the ignition control module on my 92 lumina started dying as i was driving through nowhere virginia. It would stop working when hot, and the sympton of it failing was the tach would shoot to zero, and stay at zero when the car was cranked until it cooled off. Which i believe are similiar to the symptoms of a bad crank position sensors. so there I was... drive five minutes, wait ten, drive five, wait ten, drive five, wait ten, drive five, wait ten, drive five, wait ten... But you are saying that he is just loaning you the car? I might avoid that, simply because of the liabliliy. What happens to your friendship if something happens to it? Would he ream you out for the cost? you can see I've loaned out cars to members of my family, and that is working quite well. but thats family. Quote
1990lumina Posted August 28, 2006 Report Posted August 28, 2006 It's an old '92 GP, if something happens to it, big deal??? That's how I see it anyway...just have insurance on it and yeah, should be all good!! Quote
