wreckless123
I just picked up a 91 Buick Regal for cheap with low miles. This thing runs and drives great the only problem is the brakes. The previous owner has over $4000 in reciepts for brake work over the past three years from pads, rotors, drums, flex hoses ect. He even at one point had the ABS unit go bad and had it rebuilt. When I got it the brake pedal suprised me because as you came onto the pedal with any amount of preasure it would kick back for the first second, almost feeling rigid! Then it would brake decent. On my drive home both the ABS light and Brake light was on. I checked the fluid level and it was waaaayyyyy low. I filled it and took it for a drive. Looks like the Brake light went off but the ABS light is still on and the pedal still kicks! Any ideas? Thanks...
97loudcut
Another faulty ABS unit? Try pulling out the fuse for the ABS (this would shut off the ABS) and take it for a drive and see how the brakes react. I pull my ABS fuse on all my vehicles because ABS is what caused me to crash my first car (97 Cadillac STS)
Crazy K
OH GOD. White93z34
give it a rest ken, theres plenty of people here that can make maintaining a PMIII system affordable.
LukeZ34
The Powermaster in the TGP was doing this same thing. Bleeding the brakes at all 4 calipers, and at the master cylinder fixed the problem.
wreckless123
I will pull the ABS fuse tonight and see if it helps.. If not I will try to bleed the brakes.. How do you bleed the mastercylinder when it is on the car? I have bench blead them before but unsure how to do it on the car?
LukeZ34
Follow this procedure for bleeding: http://tpsgarage.com/TGP/brakes/powermaster.htm#BLEEDING Save yourself the time, DON'T pull the ABS fuse. It will NOT fix your problem. You have an electrical braking system, and pulling ANY fuse will render it completely inoperable.
wreckless123
Well I bled the brakes in the proper sequence and it dident help. What surprised me is when I pulled the cover off the master cylinder the rear fluid was white with bubbles I think?!?! Is that normal? It eventually cleared up.. Anymore ideas its still kicking me.. mfewtrail
The powermaster system will have some "pedal feedback"(kick back as you're describing it) to it, that's normal. How many pedal presses do you get before your hear the abs motor running? Also, with the fluid low, you could have a leak somewhere(rear of the ABS housing or the proporitioning valve at the rear of the car could be leaking). If you can find no leaks, then maybe you got lucky and the previous owner or whoever else worked on the car simply didn't fill up the master cylinder to the proper level. Not this much, its frightening how much kick back I get for the first second. It feels like the pedal is solid as a rock, then it go to feeling normal.. Supreme Cutlass
yeah screw abs i totalled my first car thanks to abs. i would rather just use the feature to lower my insurance. lol The powermaster III is different than most ABS systems though... it's not like you can just say screw it and pull the fuse and excpect it to work properly. Bossman429
My TSTE did that when I bought it, it also had brake fluid seeping out of the cap. In my case it was because someone filled the reservoir without properly bleeding the master cylinder (40 pumps) prior to removing the cap. If you don't bleed the system the level won't be correct when topping it off.
