Probing the ALDL isnt going to make the engine light flash, and for the most part, no parts store has an OB2 scanner capable of pulling OBD 1.5 codes. You're most likely going to have to take it to a shop or the dealer. Basically 94-95 is an OBD 2 style ECM running OBD program. Some cars got the 12 pin ALDL and some have the newer 16 pin DLC. It's not prom like anything up to 93, and it's not flash like anything 96 and up. It's a bastard child of the two systems. And it's a pain in the ass to deal with.

  • 3 weeks later...

I haven't seen a 16-pin diag connector on an "obd1.5" car. My '95 which was built in February '95 has the old style 12-pin...stock at least. An OBD1 scanner that reads data (not tries to flash the check engine light) will read "obd1.5"

thanks for the reminder, I thought about whether the obd 1.5 connector coulod be replaced (or even better, wired in parrallel) with a donor obd 2 connector and the system be read by the OBD2 computer.

this is interesting, and I now have a laptop...

I would fab one up myself, if I can figure out how to do it, and read the info with one of those programs contained within.

rockfangd, is your car having issues, or is the light just on?

I used to have a '95 Camaro with the OBD "1.5" and it was not a thing to be happy about. I lucked out though: an Advance Auto Parts near me happened to have the Actron Super AutoScanner (CP9145), which is capable of reading both OBDI and II AND has the appropriate cables for both, among other things. I used it several times. Put the OBDII cable on and run an OBDI scan, and it pulls the codes with no problems.

If you're lucky, a store nearby will have one. Most likely, however, your best bet is just to buy one of your own, off ebay or whatever. They aren't super cheap but if you plan on keeping the car a long time, it'd definitely be worth having.

**All this assuming you have the OBDII style port w/16 pins but the emissions sticker says OBDI. It wasn't clear to me from the description whether that was the case.

obd 1.5 is the worst thing ever created

You aint kiddin there!

OTC makes a scanner that you can use with OBD 1 ( or OBD1.5 for those who like to say that ) that works great! Although rather pricey, you can look at anything in the cars system.
