intern8tion9l
yeah so heres the latest: when i let the car idle to warm up, it starts blowing out clouds of smoke. also when i downshift and i'm coasting in low gear/higher rpm (say an exit ramp) a cloud of smoke will start puffing out. this thing is really starting to get to me and its like every time there is something new its something wierd that i don't know about
rakooon
Color?
mfewtrail
It's most likely a turbocharger oil seal leaking(bluish colored smoke). If you find oil in your intercooler charge pipes, the cold side/compressor seal is leaking, if the pipes are clean, it's going to be a turbine side seal. Check the TGP section and/or the TGP board, there have been a lot of topics like this in the past.
intern8tion9l
19cutlass94 also suggested i might be losing a cylinder due to a bad spark plug....the smoke is white and does have kind of a nasty fuel smell to it. i am running ngk iridium plugs, of which i have heard some bad reviews..... Crazy K
change your plugs do an oil change (oil might be contaminated with fuel) and report back! Â
intern8tion9l
will do. she's due for an oil change anyway
R Dubya
AC Delco R42LTS plugs. gapped at .040"
intern8tion9l
well looks like we have a winner. one of the plugs is dicolored, wet, and smells pretty nasty. of course its one in the back.....but anyway, is it ok for me to change just one, or should i change them all? 19Cutlass94
You could probably get away with changing one, but really just change them all.
R Dubya
do them all and get away from those "higher performance" plugs. The AC Delco R42LTS is what is meant to be in these cars, I have never fouled one when there wasn't a bad coil, ICM, or injector. Speaking of which, have you determined what caused the fouling? 19Cutlass94
It was probably because the iridium just got ate up.
intern8tion9l
well i will go with the delcos. too bad the store was closed today. i wish this were the only problem with the car
R Dubya
was it only one plug? do you have a bad coil?
mfewtrail
I've also never had a plug foul w/o having other issues. If the new plug you swap in gets fouled again, I would start looking at the injector on that cylinder(remove the fuel rail/injectors from the intake manifold and then check for leaks while the rail is pressurized). I recently replaced three injectors in my TGP, they were leaking pretty bad(it's very common for the early multec style injectors to fail). My car smoked at startup w/ the leaky injectors for what it's worth.
Mach 5
Since the car is burning a white smoke, you could have a coolant leak. Id do a compression test on all the cylinders and compare your results. The fuel smell could be the injector or a leaky valve or gasket.
