Z34-5speed
Alright, right now i have this current intake setup... It's ok, the car runs better with it, but it gets extremely hot under the hood on my car. I don't know why exactly. There isnt any exhaust leaks and my 93 Z34 Auto didn't get near this hot. Anyway, i was wondering how much of a differance it would make to put the filter in the fender, away from most of the heat. Relocating the battery isn't an option, but the window washer fluid resivour is already gone. I was thinking i could turn the battery sideways and run a flexible hose or something like that to the fender. I would heat wrap any exposed metal from the intake so it wouldn't get as hot under the hood. Any ideas, directions, or personal stories(having to do with this) that anyone could add? Thanks alot. Psych0matt
with that setup, my first suggestion would be to put the top of the air box back on (if it fits with that filter setup) and cut out the bottom and/or battery side of the box, allowing it to stay slightly cooler, although probably not an incredible amount
Z34-5speed
with that setup, my first suggestion would be to put the top of the air box back on (if it fits with that filter setup) and cut out the bottom and/or battery side of the box, allowing it to stay slightly cooler, although probably not an incredible amount I wanted to do that but i need to cut a notch out of the top of the box to fit it over the pipe. I dont have a jig saw or any kind of saw to do that. I would probably cut the side of it because it is so hot below it. Thanks. Kyle
Psych0matt
cut a notch out of the bottom? I'll try and get some pics of my setup sometime
Z34-5speed
So would it be a performance improvement over my current setup? Putting it in the fender, that is.
mfewtrail
A fenderwell intake would help. Colder air = better. You may gain a few ponies from a nicely designed FWI, but the FWI will also help you make more consistent power. With your setup now, if you made a few back to back WOT runs, the cone filter will become heatsoaked in short order. With the fenderwell intake, you will be taking in air that is a lot closer to the ambient air temperature all the time, so the car will not lose as much power after back to back runs. Another thing to consider is intake tubing material. If you did construct a FWI and used metal tubing, I would wrap it with a heat-resistant wrap to try to keep heat down. Cam'ron
trust me FWI FTW i noticed very nice top end gains with the FWI you wont really gain any HP with a FWI but what youre "gaining" is what you arent loosing to the heat of a HAI. you might even loose a little low end grunt i think i did anyways but you sure notice it once your moving and FWIW a FWI can be had very easily.... of course everyone here hates me becasue i didnt have to move anything to do mine just the stock air box but mine cost me about $60 CAD including about 40 for the K&N filter Here is a pic if you havent seen my setup before
Z34-5speed
god i hate you...j/k What is the thing surrounding the filter, it looks like you bought it like that. I'm gonna try to do it this weekend. Kyle
Cam'ron
it is simply a panel of roof flashing for around exhaust vents. it cost me 7 bucks canadian at home depot
AWeb80
here ya go....first 2 are big pics......the last is a link to how i built my FWI.....Notice in the first 2 pics how I made a heat shield over the x-pipe....it works...the shield is friggin hot and the intake is cool enough to touch, even after idleing for a few minutes. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v639/AWeb/NCGP%20Pics/Picnic043.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v639/AWeb/NCGP%20Pics/Picnic045.jpg http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v639/AWeb/CAI%20Pics/
z34Phoenix
there is no substute for a good FWI. the main thing to remember is: Cold air =denser air....Denser air means more oxygen =more power! this is the most recent pic i have online at the moment... i'll try and get pics of my newest steup soon. I used PVC pipe to reduce heat soak, and have the tube further insulated...and have the fender itself sealed from the engine bay. if you go to pg 6 on my cardomain website (in my profile) you will find a rather long list or writeups with at least 2-3 verisons of my FWI that have made/ improved over the years. pwmin
http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v476/pwmin/cai/ thats my fwi. i havent dyno'd it yet with that on, but wrapped, it definitely helps. here's a good idea if you can make it work for yours http://www.clubgp.com/newforum/tm.asp?m=3260748&p=1&tmode=1&smode=
Cam'ron
pmwin... your setup looks really clean but have you had any problems with dirt n shit getting all over your filter, that looks to be very low in the fender. i like how mine is setup because i dont have to remove the inner fender to change the filter yet with the roof flashing it is sealed off from the engine bay, i am right now thinking of a material i could apply to the fender side of the flashing to further insulate the filter from the engine heat, as well as somehow double walling the intake tube itself for better heat dissapation
Z34-5speed
Those links help ALOT!!! Thanx to all of yall. Z34Phoenix, according to your Cardomain your car only runs a 16.5. Is that what it really runs? Kyle
Cam'ron
i should hope he runs faster than that... should be faster than me
Z34-5speed
I was lookin at my car today and i don't see anywhere that a tube could fit on the left front(drivers side). I did manage to put the filter where the batter was, now i am kinda worried that the battery is to close to the manifold. I'll have pics up tomarrow. I am going to heat wrap the metal tubing that is exposed now and then see what that gives me. Kyle
Supreme Cutlass
why not relocate the battery?
AWeb80
why not relocate the battery? yeah...takes a little time and about $70 or so..... not too bad.
pwmin
no, it doesnt get really dirty, plus i have a drycharger on it.
Z34-5speed
Alright, here are some pics of what i did manage to do the other night. I still plan on heat wraping the tube and possibly(need $$$) relocating the battery. I like this for now, even though it looks like shit. Sorry for the big pics, they are high detail. AWeb80
i'd be really leary about the battery that close to the x-pipe.....gets really hot.
Z34-5speed
I was worried about that. I'm thinkin about heat wraping the bottom of the battery if i dont move it. Kyle
jeremy
that intake isn't really in the fender well...and like mentioned above I probably wouldn't put the battery that close....what is holding the battery in place?
Z34-5speed
It is wedged between the fileter. The cables hold it pretty tight also. I know it isn't in the fender but it is better than it was. Kyle
Supreme Cutlass
I wouldn't stick with that, I've seen people mount the battery horizontally, that way it's not in harm's way, then mount the tubing around it. I'd be worried about the acid coming out and splattering on everything after it hits the x-pipe or something along those lines.
