blkinternational
so today i was heading back from parts galore....and i noticed my tempature gauge was a little high aroudn 220...affter another mile or so it was barried at 280 and i saw smoke coming from under the hood. so i pulled over and poped the hood and it looked as if coolent was pooring out of the camshaft breather. coolent was all around the throttle body area.. and my car was almost empty on coolent. (coolent level was good last week) and i pulled out my dip stick and there was coolent in the oil wtf??????
Mach 5
Intake and probably a head gasket. I feel bad. I just did that on my car a couple months ago.

Mach 5
$120 estimate + coolant and oil What you will need-Felpro head gaskets, intake(upper, lower), exhaust, Throttle body, egr, gaskets and anything else that falls in between. Now I own the 3.1 but I believe they are relatively the same engine. You should get the heads machined if they are out of spec. I would recommend either a Haynes manual or Alldata for this. You can use Alldata on http://www.autozone.com for free. If you want, I can send you pics of my manual that has the 3100 in it if you like sometime this weekend. blkinternational
i have the chiltons manual will this work...
White93z34
since you have a 3100 theres a good possability that its just the intake gaskets, my sugestion is to buy all the necessary parts to do both head and intake gaskets, mabie do a compression check just to be safe then tear down and depending on how bad the intake gaskets look, i'd decide wether or not to do head gaskets. 3100s are cake to tear apart. Mach 5
I would check the heads any way. You only pay another about $30 and I can clean the engine free of all its gunk. Mine engine turns over twice as fast just because of all the caked on crud I removed from the intake and from the top of the pistons and the heads. Just remember to rub some oil in the cylinders before you reasemble and use gasket sealer on the head and intake bolts. Yes the chiltons manual will work if its for your car. I don't know how specific they get though.
5speedz34
Depending on mileage I would do headgasksets anyways, and get the rebuilt and hot tanked. You should be able to get from the heads up gasket set for like $150.
Mach 5
Felpro has that but it doesn't include the lower intake and exhaust gaskets
blkinternational
im having so much trouble trying to tear this down i have no idea what im doing either..im stock with tryin to remove the feul rail!
Mach 5
Yeah thats a bitch. Remove the 4 bolts on the rail and the fuel lines(plug the lines when removed). Remove the injector clips by pushing the pin in and pulling them and label them(front, back) (1,3,5),(2,4,6) Just take a screw driver and pry the fuel rail up easily each side at a time. You will need to remove the power steering and the alternator as well as everything in the back that is attached to the lower Intake manifold. The power steering bolts are located behind the pulley. There are 3 of them. [attachment deleted by admin] Removed to free up storage space.

Supreme Cutlass
what color is the smoke? how thick?
Brian P
it's probably just residual oil and other fluids from taking the engine apart. Are you sure you plugged the single-wire temp sensor back in?
blkinternational
yeah im sure its plugged in im just going to go get another one. is this safe to drive or should i wait till i get the sensor to se if the car is going to overheat
Brian P
that's your call. If you're sure all of the air has been purged from the cooling system, and you see no signs of overheating, you should be ok. You should change the oil too, obviously. I'm just a little surprised cause the sensors usually just won't die like that (unless a wire is broken) also be careful with cheap aftermarket temp sensors. I bought one from Autozone, and after installation, would slowly creep the temp gage to 260F++. Faulty sensor.
