Mach 5
Has anyone ever heard of a company called R1 Concepts. I saw them on Ebay one time and figured that I would check them out. They seem to have a pretty good line of brakes and pads. You can find them at: http://www.r1concepts.com/ Tell me what you think about them. Im checking out brakes for my 89 Grand Prix SE. dohc v6
i might order the ss brake set
Mach 5
I was thinking of that as well but Im not made of money. Between my exhaust and brakes and everything else Im planning on doing to the car its not worth it right now. I just figured that I would upgrade my front brakes with these since they get so hot that they smoke and warp. They seem to look good but R1 Concepts looks like an out of a home type of business. Thats why Im asking. I wonder if these rotors would crack under high heat.
intern8tion9l
they look liek a good deal.... but whats the deal, we have to order for the 90+ lumina to get rotors that fit or what?
Mach 5
Id think that since they are W-bodys, they should all fit for your year.
intern8tion9l
but how can it be for 90-99 when the rotor sizes/front knuckles changed? or does that not apply to luminas?
Mach 5
now you got me.
Crazy K
the fine print states that you must state year, make, model, engine, transmission, FWD or RWD, two or four door, dealership of origin, what factory it came from, what assembly line it was produced on, what shift, date the car was made, what day of the week the car was made on, whether the guy who drove it off the assembly line was drunk at the time and whether he has ever slept with his sister. It's like jcwhitney does, they have a generic price they give you, and then you have tell them what you have. Which my dad finds quite horrible, since they often include within the generic table items that don't exist. ie a dashboard cover for a 72 lincoln continental. they are the same from 71 to 77(or 78) based on what i have seen. JCW advertises 68-90 lincoln dashpads, but claims the model he selected is not availble. I'm sure they would say the same thing if you contacted them and wanted pads for a CS which of course are the same as the lumina and GP and regal... "Oh we don't carry those"
intern8tion9l
perhaps when i get some money i'll upgrade to newercutlass brakes and give them a try. i just want to be able to stop
PCGUY112887
I got their slotted and drilled rotors on my GP, love em no problems, no cracking, etc. The silver coating has started to crack off on the edges (can't tell unless you have the tire off and such), but I think that's expected with any rotor with coating. He should be able to make em for just about any car for the price listed. All of his holes are countersunk and such so the risk of cracking should be nil. I don't do any AutoXing with them but i've made a few very hard quick stops from a high speed on the street with no problems.
Mach 5
So in your opinion to other brakes, are these the way to go?
PCGUY112887
If you don't want to spend a lot of cash for more "proper" slotted/drilled rotors, then I say these are some of the best modified stockers that i've seen. However I just got my own pads from Autozone.
Mach 5
Is the metal as soft as the stock rotors? I was going to go buy some green stuff pads.
PCGUY112887
As soft? Mine sure aren't soft
Mach 5
Well my problem is the warpage of the stock rotors (F+R). You can actually stop at a light and see smoke coming from the wheels. Anyways thanks for your help cuz Im ordering them soon.
PCGUY112887
I think something more is wrong if your brakes are doing that... I mean I have full ceramic racing style pads and I don't have that problem.
Mach 5
I think it could be just the older design of the brakes and the small rotors.. It is also very tuff to drive here in NY so that could be it. It could also be the poor ventilation of the alloy wheels. But whatever it is, I hope this fixes it. Either they won't work at all, allowing only your fronts to stop the car, overheating them. OR they will keep one pad on the rotor at all times, and overheat the rears. - What pads are you using now? Mach 5
just OE semi metalics. Basically what my mom left me with when she gave me the car. The rears work fine. I think it could have something to do with the parking brake not releasing. I fixed that.
red92s
For what its worth I have a set of R1 concepts rotors, They're pretty good for the price although the plating on one of them isnt holding up too well, but the other three are pretty good. Theres definitely a difference if you get these and use some braided lines. Braking will never be a strong point w/ these cars.
Euro
hmm...next time i need rotors i'll look em up

Mach 5
Well, here we go. The brakes are already installed. I used Duralast Gold pads from Autozone to complement the rotors. It stops nice. The pics are below. Just click on the links By the way- The rear calipers were seized and took a bit of work to get the sleeves out. The rear rotor had giant gooves in them from the calipers being siezed up. [attachment deleted by admin] Removed to free up storage space.
