geenick
My cutlass has started leaking oil pretty bad. I had it in for an oil change and they pressure washed the car and put some UV dye in the oil to track down the leak. They told me that the cam cover gaskets were leaking which I suspected, but also mentioned the distributor gasket. I know it doesn't have a distributor, but they still call it that. Is this a hard gasket to change? I need to get it to stop leaking. Are there other gaskets I need to do while I'm replacing this one? I know I'm going to do the cam covers which involves the plennum, but I truthfully thought only the 3.1/2.8's had that distributor place gasket... Any suggestions? Pontiac6KSTEAWD
Its called a distributor delete O-ring. On the 3.1 and 2.8 its fairly easy. I dont know about the DOHC thou. The O-ring is about 3-4 bucks at your local autozone, and there actually is a gasket you can get with it just in case the 0-ring fails again. Its like a buck. I put both on my 230k 6k just in case LOL. No leaks yet.
slick
To properly fix the O-ring on the 3.4's, you have to pull the rear head, but thats a bitch. So, most people put a notch in the head so they can slip in a gasket.

White93z34
notching the head is a terrible idea in my opinion, and before i get someone whos done it atacking me, i don't care if yours dosen't leak coolant, but cuting that much off a cooling duct just seems like a very bad idea, what i'd do if i was you, take it all apart to the point where slick put his picture, then go out and buy a distributer gasket.... or 2 for a 86' chevy celeberity, or a 88' camaro 2.8, clean all surfaces very well, and cut one side of it and slip it between the block and the top of the pump drive and make sure to use a fair amount of black RTV, and let it dry good and you shoulden't have to worry about it again. 5speedz34
I don't think notching the head will give you any problems, but I wouldn't want to risk it.
