Proper way to prepare body for paint?

What's the best way to prep a car's surface for paint? I've got my GP ready for paint and wanna get it finished soon. A buddy of mine is going to paint the parts, but I wanna have them ready to go. The parts are off a black GP and they're going to be painted whatever-color red to match the rest of the car.

Wipe it down with wax and grease remover, sand it, etc.
