KrazyCutlass1995
I recently bought a 97 gtp and the fuel gauge seems to work sometimes when i turn the key on accurtley for a few mins then go all way past full ... sometimes it sets half way , and sometimes stays at full for long time ... was just wondering if this is the fuel level sending unit , the float in the tank , or its the cluster ... also if its the fuel level sending unit does it half to come from another l67 or another 3xxx motor's sender work ... thanks guys
Mach 5
To narrow it down I believe it wound be the sending unit, then the cluster. I couldn't see just 1 guage acting up. So I think its the sending unit.

ron350
See if this link works. http://198.208.187.182/internet/VehiclePartDescription.jsp?selectedfld=&application=Car%2FLight+Duty+Truck&year=1997&make=PONTIAC&model=GRAND+PRIX+GTP&engine=V6+3.8L+231cid+GAS+FI+S+Engine+VIN+%3D+1++++++&productline=22&part=6258 Things to try with key turned to run motor off to see if gas gauge will jump. Have someone push up and down on the back of the car. Shake the steering wheel and adjust tilt column up and down. I read something at BITOG about Techron cleaning sulfur off fuel sending units. http://theoildrop.server101.com/cgi/ultimatebb.cgi Also have read about 97 GTP ignition switches causing strange problems? intern8tion9l
i recently seem to have encountered the same problem....i have WAY too much gas left after a long trip and it'll read 1/8 of a tank 1 min and like almost a full tank a little later. is the DIC info based on the gas gauge as well? runt
I don't know about the 1st Gen's, but I know on the 2nd Gen's it's the Sending unit. I guess it's a circuit board inside of the tank and with the wonderful way that the gas has been lately it ends up guming up, or even putting a glaze on this board. There is a product out there (Dragon something...fuck I can't remember right now...) that will take care of this with out dropping the tank. It's like $15 or something. Now, don't quote me on this I've just heard thats how it is on these cars from 2 different mechanics so whatever....
Crazy K
i recently seem to have encountered the same problem....i have WAY too much gas left after a long trip and it'll read 1/8 of a tank 1 min and like almost a full tank a little later. is the DIC info based on the gas gauge as well? I think so, it detects how much gas the car has as it feeds off the same wire.
1990lumina
sounds like my car...but urs is way nicer I wouldn't expect that....earlier 90s GM and 80s GMs all have crazy fuel gages lol...my dad's '87 Suburban one time wrapped the fuel gage when we filled it....my Lumina goes way past full and funs out before empty lol... 95oldsVan
My 97 Gp Se does the same damn thing...fuel gauge needle is never correct.have to turn the key on and off a few times to see it move to where I think gas is really at...sucks...maybe Ill try that cleaner stuff or just drop the tank down since the tranny is broken and isnt being driven and try cleaning it all off myself with something. Cant hurt and this seems to be a very common problem with these cars eh?
digitaloutsider
This is a VERY common 1997 GM problem. They used a certain chemical to test the fuel level sender that initially corroded the device that measures the level of the gasoline in the tank. Supposedly you can pull this unit out and clean it thoroughly with isopropyl alcohol and stick it back in the tank and all should be fine and dandy. You can access this from the trunk. Brian P
Odd, my sister's '02 Grand Prix fuel gauge will read empty after the car sits overnight. Drive around a little, and the gauge goes up to wherever it's supposed to be. I thought maybe a bad connector in the wiring harness but I dunno....75k!
