chadz34
Is there really much harm in driving with no air filter in the airbox when driving around town? I wouldn't dare on the highway, but in town with clean air and the MAF screen as a basic filter, is it really that harmful? The reason I ask is, it hauls a shitload more ass with no filter in there. Cam'ron
i would tend to say... they put them there for a reason.... but then again they do not run an airfilter on a pro drag car so for short times maybe it is ok

digitaloutsider
You'd be a moron to run a car without a filter. They're there for a reason.

patgizz
and you could suck something up and ruin your MAF. my not so bright cousin took the air filter out of her kia cause it was clogged and she didn't want to drop $5 on a new one. she got a pine needle stuck on the throttle blade and almost wrecked because the throttle stuck open. Intlcutlass
i would tend to say... they put them there for a reason.... but then again they do not run an airfilter on a pro drag car so for short times maybe it is ok yea , but they will replace an engine at the drop of a hat. How many runs will a drag car go, before they replace it completely, just becuase? If ANY thing gets past the screen on your MAF.... it's going to end up in your combustion chamber..... Not good. 19Cutlass94
Run it without a filter, see what happens. I dont know why we even have this topic.
ToroToro
Look at how dirty your filter is, and picture all that going into your motor. My K&Ns are darn near black after 5-10K around here. I drove the CS a couple blocks without a filter after I finished the intake gaskets to make sure everything was good, but I wouldnt do any more than that. Unless you want to...dont make no difference to me.
z284pwr
Eventually it destroys the piston rings BTW.....So you get to have blow-by and oil into the combustion chamber and bad times lead from that....My uncle had the intelligent idea once and found discovered it....among other things it can cause.... *This was back in the day though*
Supreme Cutlass
Why don't you get one of the wire-mesh filters for "off road" use? Just for when you want to go out and race of course, but If you really want that performance, they'll block out sand and the other large particulates, just not the small ones that do damage over time. 1990lumina
Just the run the filter and be done with it, as stated it's there for a reason. Only time I've ran a car with no filter is in my garage while working on the carb on my RX-7, had to remove the air cleaner to make adjustments.... RJansen658
Believe it or not, I have seen lots of customers bring in cars with no air filters in them.... granted they are ghetto beaters but still you'd be surprised to know how many people are dumb enough to drive around with no air filter. We once had a guy have his car towed in for a no start... and it had 79k on it. Toyota. Checked spark checked fuel checked compression. Took off air cleaner box top and snorkel to compression test #4 last cylinder had good compression. Put plugs in. start car. runs fine. shut off car put air cleaner together. Car starts, but stalls out won't restart. take off air cleaner and snorkel car starts. during all of this I never picked the filter out of the box. Pulled it out and filter and box were entirely full... packed full. There was a sock in it!
Psych0matt
There was a sock in it! I woulda put the sock on my head and ran around the shop flailing my arms yelling "I am the sock monster! RAWR!!!"

Cam'ron
roffle and i agree with the drag race engines tear down statement but i tried to use it to make a point... just leave the filter in... better that way
1990lumina
I'll go take my air box apart tomororw and snap and picture...you'll see why you'll want the filter in place...well at least around here. haha i'll be surprised if i don't find another mice nest in the air box haha
White93z34
when i saw that topic i just said tomyself outloud... " you have to be kidding me..." i'm prety sure that if you wanted i could snap a picture of all the random crap that gets in my airbox every 10k or so, leaves, pine needles, road grime. just don't come complaining when you wipe the rings out with little bits of dirt and grime, and start using oil like its going out of style.
