FastSE2DR
Alright, For the past year or so my transmission has been acting weird. It started off having trouble shifting into 4th gear. The only way I could get it to do it was to nicely accelerate to 50mph then it would drop right then. I could also "downshift" the selector to 3rd then to D and it would sometimes work. So after a few months of doing that, it just stopped shifting to 4th all together. I was stuck with 3rd gear on the interstate(blah at 3k@70mph) for awhile. Now just the other day since its been really hot, I raced my buddies Miata on the interstate for S&G's and it didn't want to shift to 3rd anymore. I found that if I stick the selector in 3 and move it to D it shifted to 3rd for awhile then would downshift again. Now today, it would only work if I did 2nd to 3rd. I should mention that my selector has been messed up ever since 4th gear disappeared. 1st isn't actually first. Before I could downshift into "1" and it would drop. Now it doesn't do shit and shifts normally when its left in "1". "2" and "3" same to be the exact same gear and when I shift it into "D" thats when it would go into 3rd. When I got it to shift to 3rd today, it would just shift and then downshift right away again. It seems like there is something with the TCU or something is out of adjustment. I will check the fluid when I am done writing this. 1994 3100 with 4T60E
FastSE2DR
OK, checked the fluid, and it seemed "ok". I say "ok" because I couldn't really tell where the fluid level was at because it was runny. It looked like it was on the cross hatched part but I'm not really sure. It definately wasnt all the way to the top though. It seemed extremely dirty too. Still had a reddish color but it was dirty. Any ideas? slick
How many miles? I would go ahead and do a filter and fluid change. If it has decently lower miles, then go ahead with a flush. Do you know if it has had any service work before?

Do you know if it has had any service work before? It's got 157k. I have owned the car since 109k, and since then I haven't touched the tranny. The owners before me I believe bought it new and seemed to do regular service but I bet they didn't touch the tranny.
slick
Eh... I would just do a fluid and filter change. With that many miles and your not sure if a flush has been done, it's something I wouldn't do.

I know enough to know how they work but no idea how to do anything with em.
slick
Yeah, just drop the pan. You will want to loosen the bolts on one side a bit more than the other side to let it drain out. Then, you will see the filter right there. Can be a bit of a tug 'o' war, but it will come out. There will be a o-ring sorta deal up the filter neck your going to want to get out. BTW, if you have the nice stock gasket that has the metal rings around the bolts, re-use it. The replacement copper gasket blows.

Maybe I'll do this tonight.

FastSE2DR
Any additives I should try? stay away from them unless you're seriously having trouble. I bought some SeaFoam shit. It's basically there to clean the varnish and shit outta stuff. Should I try that or not? You only leave it in for like 5 miles.
RJansen658
Dude, with 157k... and no previous flush, by now, the varnish has befome A PART of the internals of the trans, especially the band material. if you use that seafoam, or flush it, maybe even just by changing the fluid.... you will end up with no gears. But you have to do something as the trans is already on its way out. I personally, would only change the fluid. Not the filter. A LOT of shops do it that way, people just don't know it. I've seen flushes waste transmissions with 115k before. I wasted a trans in a Lumina with a fluid and filter change at 142k. And no i didn't mess up, I've dropped hundreds of trans pans. I wouldn't use any cleaners, but you can try other additives if a fluid change doesn't clear it up, and give it a week to clear up. There are a lot of shift improvers and friction modifiers that can help old tranny's. No matter what you do, and wether it clears up or not.... it will be back again, can't stop it forever with fluids. Properly maintained, a 4T60-E can go far beyond 200k, I've seen a few well past 200k and a few on thier way. Well, good luck with that... FastSE2DR
So, if I just drop the pan I really need to put 5 1/2 QTs in? That seems like how much the tranny would actually take if you drained the converter etc.

slick
Does that write-up help atleast? It's really easy to do. I know if you mess with DSM's and Supra's, this is gonna be a walk in the park.

I knew it wasn't gonna be a problem but I had just never done it and I like to have a little direction when I first do something, especially since I've hardly ever touched an auto tranny.
